Impact of Land

Use
Transformation
on River Yamuna
of Delhi.
SPA DELHI
Introduction
 Rivers are the last open valleys of the urban terrain, last remaining paths where man can re-establish his rights of access
and enjoyment. They are also ecological system that demands the highest priority in conservation and quality protection,
more than any other catalyst, riversides hold the greatest hope for bringing in a revival of confidence in urban physical
environment. Let us manage them well. - Roy Mann (River in the Cities,1973)
 River plays major role within the city. Humans have settled along the river which they have used for fulfilling their
primary requirement and since because of their unchallengeable importance, the river water has been deemed with the
special stature as sacred sites. The river role of has increased as the till day today life. The river water quality is also
getting deteriorated as result of increase of population in the city putting immense pressure on river water quality. As a
result decrease in water quality kills aquatic life in river water. Taking Yamuna River as an example which is getting
polluted flows through Delhi. This study focuses on how and why the Gomti River is getting polluted and identifying the
major problems by using specific methods.
Purpose of the Study
 To test if the river quality gets affected adversely due to increase in urbanization causing increase in population and change in land
use river Yamuna passing through Delhi is used as an example to illustrate deterioration in water quality due to increase in
urbanization.

Need for Study

1. Yamuna River is getting affected, while meandering through the heart of the city; it is 26 joined by drains which shed their pollutants
discharge in the river.

2. Due to high pollution levels in the river have negative effects on the ecosystem of the Yamuna threatening its aquatic life and it can be
measure by taking specific parameters these are BOD, DO and Coliform.

3. Human activity along the catchments area/water front as recreational purpose, bathing, washing clothes, etc. affects the water quality
negatively.
Aim
 To study the Impact of planned urban land use transformation on river Yamuna water pollution increase, passing
through New Delhi over a span of three decades due to population increase.

Objective
1 To analyse the trend of land conversion by studying the land use patterns over a period of time.

2. To study and identify the major problems related to the deterioration in water quality of Yamuna River. It is identify as
the impact of land use transformation on river Gomti using parameters of Dissolved oxygen (DO), Biological Oxygen
Demand (BOD) and coliform count.

3. To give significant proposal along river.

Scope
 1. To identity and understand the change in land use due to population increase on Yamuna river.
 2 To identify the existing problems and to suggest conservation plans for future development.

Limitations
1. As it covers a very large area of the river, the study is largely based on upon the data obtained through secondary
sources and visual surveys.
2. The study is done within the city along the river basin and limited to planning methods/approach.
Methodology

Secondary Data
• Existing Land Use
Plans
• Sewage Plans
• Census Data
• Programmes for river
