APPROACHES, METHODS
AND TECHNIQUES
DEFINITION:
 Approach
– A set of assumptions dealing with the nature of language, learning and
teaching.
– Springs from teacher’s own philosophy of education.
– The theoretical framework that supports an instructional design.
 Method
– Is considered the practical realization of an approach.
– A teaching design based on a particular approach.
– An overall plan for systematic presentation of language based upon a
selected approach.
DEFINITION:
 Technique
– Specific activities manifested in the classroom that are consistent with
a method and therefore in harmony with an approach.
– A tool that is used to obtain an immediate result.
– Teaching procedures that are employed with a particular method
 Approach is treating something in a certain way while Method is a way
something is done, perhaps used for routine tasks and Technique is a
procedure or skill for completing a specific task.
DEFINITION:
B. Indirect/ Guided/ Exploratory Approach
2. Problem Solving Method
– It is a student-centered strategy which require students to
become active participants in the learning process.
– This method develops scientific process skills and helps in
developing brainstorming approach to learning concepts.
– Also known as investigatory process.
ADVANTAGES:
1. This method is most effective in developing skill in employing
science processes.
2. It develops higher level thinking skills.
3. A keen sense of responsibility, originality and resourcefulness are
developed, which are needed ingredients for independent study.
4. Critical thinking, open-mindedness and wise judgments are among
scientific attitudes and values inculcated through competence in
scientific method.
5. The student learn to accept the opinions and evidence shared by
others.

DEFINITION:
3. Project Method
– This method is based on the philosophy of Pragmatism and the principle of
“Learning by Doing”.
– Improving student involvement and motivation in order to foster
independent thinking, self-confidence and social responsibility.
– Projects are student-centered, following standards, parameters and
milestone clearly identified by the instructor.
CHARACTERISTICS:
1. It takes the student beyond the walls of the classroom.
2. It is carried out in a natural setting, thus making learning realistic and experiential.
3. It encourages investigative learning and solution of practical problems.
4. It is focused on the student as it enlists his/her active involvement in the task set.
5. It encourages the spirit of scientific inquiry as it involves validation of hypotheses
based on evidence gathered from the field through investigation.
6. It promotes a better knowledge of the practical aspects of knowledge gained from
books.
7. It enhances the student’s social skills, as it requires interaction with the social
environment.

DEFINITION:
C. Cooperative Learning
– An educational approach which aims to organize classroom activities into
academic and social learning experiences.
– Sometimes called small-group learning, enables small groups of students to
work together on a common task.
– The learning environment is characterized by strong motivation and smooth
interpersonal interactions.
– It involves students working together to accomplish shared goals, and it is this
sense of interdependence that motivate group members to help and support
each other.
DEFINITION:
1. Peer Tutoring/ Peer Teaching
– A teaching strategy wherein students are paired together to practice
academic skills and master content.
– Involves one or more students teaching other students in a particular
subject area and builds on the belief that “to teach is to learn twice”.
– Employed when the teacher requests the older, brighter and more
cooperative member of the class to tutor (coach, teach, instruct) other
classmates and students.
– Teacher may use peer tutoring to help accommodate a classroom full of
diverse students who need more individualized attention.
BENEFITS:
1. Peer tutoring allows for higher rates of student response and feedback,
which results in better academic achievement.
2. Peer tutoring creates more opportunities for students to practice specific
skills, which leads to better retention.
3. The student tutor gains a deeper understanding of a topic by teaching it to
another student.
4. Students involved in peer tutoring have shown more positive attitudes
toward learning and develop self-confidence.
5. Peer tutoring often helps students build relationships and practice
appropriate social interaction.
