Precolonial Literature
Lesson Objectives :
After the lesson, the students will be able to:

• describe the different literary genres during the precolonial period;


• write a two (2) stanza poem
Precolonial Literature
• It is the first and longest period of the Philippine literary
history. Long time before the Spaniards and other
foreigners landed on Philippine shores, our forefathers
already had their own literature stamped in the history
of our race.
Literary forms in Precolonial

1. Riddles 2. Proverbs 3. Poems

The proverbs and riddles are the early forms


of literature which part of the folk culture of
many tribes in precolonial days.
Literary forms in Precolonial Period
• Riddles
• Also called as bugtong in Filipino are questions or statements
that have double meaning and put forth as a puzzle to be solved.
Example :
Isang balong malalim, punong-puno ng patalim.
(A deep well that is full of chisels.)
Answer : bunganga/mouth
Literary forms in Precolonial Period
• Proverbs
• Also called as salawikain in Filipino are concrete and simple
sayings often repeated to impart a lesson. It is expressed in
brief form, a statement about the nature of life or about wise
and unwise conduct.
• Example :
Natutuwa kung pasalop
Kung singili’y napopoot.
Literary forms in Precolonial Period
• Poems
• Are made up of words that create images or pictures in your mind.
Poems use imaginative language to express feelings and ideas.
• Example :

Ang tubig ma’y malalim


Malilirip kung lipdin
Itong budhing magaling
Maliwag paghanapin
Activity IV :
• Write a 2 stanza poem about education, friendship, nature, and family.
Choose only one (1) theme.
