A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME

CHAPTER SKETCH
The story is about the writer (a teenager) who joins a new
school. He misses his old friends, teachers and old school. His
house gets destroyed in a fire and he loses all his belongings
and his pet cat. His fellow students in the new school help him
by gifting him study material and clothes. This act of kindness
touches him and he makes friends with them.
One day, while he was overlooking the construction of his new
house, a lady comes and gives him his missing cat. He is
overjoyed to get his pet cat back and suddenly all his feelings
of tragedy and insecurity go away.
About the characters
• The Teenager/ The Writer: The teenager is a high
school student. He joins a new school and misses his old
school, teachers and friends.
• The Pet Cat: The pet cat is very dear to writer.
• The Stranger: The stranger lives a mile away from the
writer. She is very helpful as she takes care of his pet cat,
finds out the details of owner of cat from phone number
on cat’s collar.
THEME

The theme of this story, "A house is not a home", is


that one must face the challenges of life head-on. That
people encounter many challenges in life but they
must stand firm and fight through them.
MESSAGE

This chapter tells us that it’s true that adversities change us but they
also give us an opportunity to recognise people and not judge them
instantly.
Tough times don’t last, tough people do.
JUSTIFICATION OF TITLE
• The title of the chapter is apt in relation to the story. The
story highlights the thin difference between a house and a
home. While a house is a building where people live, a home
is a place where a family lives together sharing the unique
bond of love and oneness. The narrator’s house gets
destroyed by fire and he gets a new house. Then he realizes
that his home is the one built by the love and affection of his
family and loved ones. Love and affection of one’s family is
precious.
Chapter Highlights
• The writer joins a new school and finds it difficult to adjust there.
• One Sunday afternoon, his house catches fire and everything is destroyed.
• His mother runs into the burning house to save a few important documents and his father’s
photographs.
• The writer is unable to find his pet cat and is crestfallen.
• They have to shift to the grandparents’ house and the writer finds it very strange that to
continue his life without proper things as everything had burnt in the fire.
• He misses his old life badly.
• His schoolmates help him with clothes, books and other essential items. He even makes
new friends.
• One day as he’s overlooking the reconstruction of his house, a lady comes and gives his cat.
He is overjoyed and realises that not all is lost. He’s filled with gratitude.
