Reasons to Run Speed Sweep

1) Running play where you really on

need to block 2 people. “Really”

2) Great outside run to open end side.

Reasons to Run Speed Sweep
3) Allows for companion Wing-T plays
without any additional teaching. Examples:
Trap, Belly, Ride, Counter Criss-Cross,
Bootleg Pass, Mid-Line.

4) Softens the 5 and 9 techniques

because of the threat of sweep.

5) Offensive team runs play with flying
40 while the defense reacts from standing
still. “Creates speed for the Offensive
Team”
Installing the Speed Sweep

Speed Sweep Must

Must in Installing the Speed Sweep
• Timing for the handoff must happen in the
play side “A” gap.

• You must use formations that allow you to

have a hat for a hat and allow your QB to
check the speed sweep at the LOS.
Must in Installing the Speed Sweep
• You must use a snap count that allows for
your QB to snap the ball when the motion
man (running full speed under control) hits
the inside leg of the Offensive Tackle on
his side.
• You must allow your QB to check the
direction of the speed sweep @ LOS!
Must in Installing the Speed Sweep
• Never block any down lineman from play
side “B” gap inside. A stand up Linebacker
that walks up into LOS must be blocked.

• Persons blocking the # 1 and # 2 defender

from the “B” gap out must attack and not
allow deep penetration into the backfield.
Must in Installing the Speed Sweep
• You must pull the play side Guard to look
for alley players or inside out players.

• The ball carrier must attempt to take the

ball outside the widest defender. If that is
not possible he must slow down slightly
and allow the PSG to get a block and cut
up.
Must in Installing the Speed Sweep
• You must have inside run plays and play
action passes off the speed motion to
keep the defenders from running straight
to the sweep.
Snap Count
• Our Quarterback will use our Go Snap
Count when ever we have extended
motion or we need to snap the ball at a
specific time. (# Set Go)
• The Back will leave in motion after
delaying for 1 second after he hears the
“set” in the cadance.
Taking the Handoff
• The back running the ball will be about 3
feet behind the Offensive Linemen as he
goes in motion. We teach him to simply
place both hands at belt level and the
quarterback will place the ball in his
hands.
Running Back Blocking
• The blocking Wingback must be taught the
proper technique needed for blocking. We
teach him to run through the outside
number of the defender and place his
facemask on the outside shoulder and use
our hands as in stalk blocking . We then
want him to work his body outside the
defender and get his body between the
defender and the sideline.
Fullback Responsibilities
• Our Fullback must be taught if there is a
Noseman, it is his responsibility to mesh
with the Quarterback and fake the trap. If
there is not a Noseman he will fake the
ride series.
Offensive Linemen Technique
• Pulling Guard: His technique for the
speed sweep is open @ 5 o’clock or
7o’clock depending on which direction the
play is going. He should only get enough
depth to get to the edge. He must be
running full speed. We teach him to look
outside first then for a defender coming
from inside out and try to pin him inside. If
we can’t pin him then kick him.
Offensive Linemen Technique
• Split End: He is taught to attack the outside
shoulder of the first defender from the sideline.
If you can block him inside. If he fights for the
boundary then pin him into the boundary.

• Backside Linemen: We use a big 45 degree

scoop on the backside. We will not stay on a
lineman on level 1. Make them go behind you.
If you engage a level 2 defender stay on him.
Other wise continue downfield to play side and

Blocking Rules For Speed Sweep
to TE Side
• Blocking decisions always begin with play
side Offensive Tackle.

• PSOT will determine if he can block 1st

defender past the “B” gap. If he can reach
him he will make a “me” call to the TE. If
he can not reach him he will make a “you”
call and the TE will block down and he will
pull for the # 3 defender form the B Gap.
Blocking Rules For Speed Sweep
to TE Side
• TE: Your decision will begin with the call
of the OT. If he call “YOU” then block the
first defender from the “B” gap. If he calls
“ME” you then must determine if you can
reach the # 2 defender from the “B” gap. If
you can reach him you will make a “Me”
call to the wingback. If you feel you can’t
reach him call “you” and the WB will block
down on # 2 and you will pull for # 3 from
the “B” gap.
Blocking Rules For Speed Sweep
to TE Side
• If the TE gets a “you” call from the OT he
must relay that to the wingback so he can
block down on # 2 automatically.

Blocking Rules For Speed Sweep
to TE Side
• PSWB: You will block the # 3 defender
from the “B” gap, unless the TE makes a
you call then you must block # 2.

• Center, BSG, BST: Reach step at a 45

degree angle and pass up all defenders on
level 1, Cutoff any defender on level 2
and proceed down field for level 3. “get
you picture in the paper”

Speed Sweep Blocking to SE Side
• SE: Block number 1 defender form the sideline
unless crack is put into the call. If you are in
bunch formations the WB may have you block
down with a call and he will pull around for your
man.

• PST: Block 1st defender outside “B” gap. If you

can block him call “ME” to the Wingback. If you
can’t block him call “YOU” to the Wingback and
he will pull for the 2nd defender past the “B” gap.
Blocking Rules For Speed Sweep
to TE Side
• PSG: Pull flat to the play side and look for any
defender showing in the alley. If he shows try to
log and if you must kick him out. If no one
shows in the alley go hash, numbers, sideline.

• PSWB: Block # 2 defender from “B” gap. Or

most immediate defender. Example is 4-3 with
safety inverted to SE side. Block Safety and we
will try to out run the WLB.

Gaining Numbers for the Speed
Sweep
• The first way to gain numbers is to use
your Fullback offset so he can get in front
of the Sweep. Or you may want to go with
unbalance formations and offset your FB
to or away and take advantage of how the
defense is adjusting to unbalance. The
other way is by going empty and forcing
the defense to adjust in some manner.
