    Jimmy Valentine is a thief who is released from prison. He sees a young woman, Annabel Adams, enter the bank owned by her father and becomes infatuated with her. He changes his name to Ralph Spencer and pretends to start a shoe business in town. After a year, he and Annabel become engaged. On the day the bank shows off its new vault, Annabel's niece gets locked inside. Jimmy uses his burglary tools to open the vault and save the girl. The detective who was tracking Jimmy realizes who he is but lets him go, allowing him to start a new life with Annabel.

    William Henry Porter[1862-1910] is an
    American short story writer. Porter was
    born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He
    particularly wrote about life of ordinary
    people in new york. His other works
    include “ The Gift Of Magi", “The
    Duplicity Of Hargraves", and “ The
    Ransom Of Red Chief".
    Jimmy valentine is a thief. The story starts like that
    he comes out of the prison as the warden releases
    him. The warden advises him not to break safe’s and
    do some business. He hands him a rail ticket and 5
    dollar. After that he goes to a café where its owner
    mike Dolan have jimmy’s hotel keys. He hands it to
    him and jimmy takes his burglary tools and set out.
    Then a string of theft happen in the neighbourhood
    and they are unable to find the thief. This matter
    goes into Ben Price’s hands who is a detective. He
    well knew jimmy’s habits and came to a conclusion
    it was jimmy again.
    One afternoon jimmy was going through Elmore with
    his suitcase in Arkansas. There he saw an young lady
    crossing by him at the corner and entered a building
    which had the sign ‘’The Elmore bank’ ’jimmy looked
    at her and forgot who he was and became another man.
    He called a boy and asked who she was, and he said
    that her name is Annabel Adams and she is the
    daughter of Mr Adams who is the owner of the bank.
    After that he went to a hotel and registered his name as
    Ralph D spencer and he said to the clerk he had come
    to Elmore to make shoe business ,seeing his rich look
    the clerk said all information, and soon jimmy’s shoe
    business started to flourish. After a year he and
    Annabel were engaged. Then he a wrote a letter to his
    friend to take all his burglary tools contained suitcase.
    On Monday night, after jimmy wrote this letter ben
    price came to Elmore. He had caught up with spencer or
    jimmy, he still didn’t know that spencer was jimmy and
    asked ‘’are going to marry the banks daughter I don’t
    know’’ he said and went.the next day morning he had a
    breakfast with Annabel's family and he went to little
    rock. The Elmore bank had just put a new safety vault
    and Mr Adams was very proud of it. Mr Adams had been
    showing this to spencer. Others present there were
    Annabel, Annabel’s married sister and her two children
    may and Agatha. The children were playing around and
    the may unknowingly shut Agatha in the vault. Everyone
    there started to get panic Mr Adams tried to open but he
    could not. So spencer brought his tools, box opened the
    vault, and saved Agatha. It was at that same time ben
    price was standing out and spencer came out to him and
    said to arrest him but ben instead acted that he never
    knew him and went away.
    MEANINGS IN THE CHAPTER
    What I like in this story ?

    I like the way that the author


    shows how a person changes
    and adapts himself to his
    surroundings.
