• WHAT EXACTLY IS ABG?
• LEARNING ALL OF ABG'S
FINDINGS AND
INTERPRETATIONS.
• HOW IS ABG ANALYSIS USED
IN CLINICAL APPLICATIONS?
Arterial Blood Gas
• An arterial blood gas test measures the
amounts of arterial gases, such as oxygen and
carbon dioxide. An ABG test requires that a
small volume of blood be drawn from the
radial artery with a syringe and a thin needle,
but sometimes the femoral artery in the groin
or another site is used. The blood can also be
drawn from an arterial catheter.
Rule of the B’s..
• If the pH & the bicarb are both in
the same direction = metabolic
• PH ↑ HCO3 ↑ or PH ↓ HCO3 ↓ it
is Metabolic
• PH ↑ HCO3 ↓ or
PH ↓ HCO3 ↑ it is Respiratory
ACIDOSIS OR ALKALOSIS !
• pH = 7.35-7.45 acidosis/alkalosis
HCO3 (bicarb) = 22-26 (2+2+2 = 6) CO2 = 45-35
• ACIDOSIS OR ALKALOSIS !
