Similes are sentences that
compare two unlike objects
using like or as.
– The girl’s hair is as yellow as the
sun.
– The boy runs like a rabbit.

Does it dry up 


like a raisin in the sun? 
Or fester like a sore-- 
And then run? 
Does it stink like rotten meat? 
Or crust and sugar over-- 
like a syrupy sweet? 

Maybe it just sags  


like a heavy load. 

Or does it explode? 
Important!
Using “like” or “as” doesn’t always mean it
is a simile!

A comparison must be made.

Not a Simile: I like pizza.

Simile: The moon is like a pizza.


Metaphors are sentences that
state one thing is another to
show a likeness between the two
using the words is, am, are, was,
and were.

Alliteration is the repetition
of the beginning consonant
sound in a group of words.

Onomatopoeia is sound

Idioms are sentences that
cannot be understood by the
meanings of their separate
words. (You have to figure out what it
really means)
