WHAT IS STAIRS
A stair is a system of steps by which people
and objects may pass from one level of a
building to another

A stair is to be designed to span large vertical

distance by dividing it into smaller vertical
distances, called steps.
Location of staircase:
● It should be so located as to provide easy access to the
occupants of the building.
● It should be so located that it is well lighted and
ventilated directly from the exterior.
● It should be so located that as to have approaches
convenient and spacious.
● In public building it should be located near, main
entrance and in residential building it should be placed
centrally.
Technical
terms:
The definitions of technical terms used in connection with the stairs are as
follows:

● Stairs. Stairs are steps arranged in series for the purpose of an assess
from one floor to the other.
● Stair-case. The room or apartment in which stairs are enclosed, is
called stair-case.
● Rise. It is the vertical distance between the two consecutive steps. The
vertical portion of the step is called
● Tread. The horizontal portion of the step is called tread. The horizontal
distance between the two consecutive risers is called Go, Going or
Run.
● Nosing. It is the front edge of the tread which projects beyond the
riser..
● Fliers: The rectangular steps of uniform shape and size are called
Fliers.
● Winders: The triangular or wedge shaped steps, used for
changing the direction are called winders.

● Flight: It is a continuous series of steps in one direction,,

separated by horizontal platforms or winders.

● Landing: It is the horizontal platform provided at the top-of a

flight. If the landing is of a rectangular shape, having a length
equal to twice the width of the stairs, the landing is called Half
Space Landing. If on the other hand, the stairs run at right angles
to each other and are separated by a square landing, the landing
is-called Quarter Space Landing.
● Line of nosing: It is the imaginary line joining the ends of nosing of all the
steps.
● Scotia block: It is a triangular wooden block used below the nosing to give
it additional strength.
● Strings or stringers: These are inclined members which support the steps.
● Headroom: It is the vertical distance between the line: of nosing and this
under surface or ceiling of the stair-case or the next flight.
● Line of walking: The tendency of a person going on the stair is to walk
along a line which is nearly 45 cm from the centre of the hind rail. This
imaginary line is called Line of walking.
● Railing: This is a moulded block of wood or some other material, provided
to afford assistance and safeguard to persons while going on the stairs. The
height of a railing should be nearly-75 cm above the line of nosing.
● Balusters. These are short vertical members which support the
hand-railing.

● Balustrade or Banister. The composite member consisting of a

hand rail, balusters, newel posts is called balustrade.

● Newel posts. These are principal balusters used at the ‘top and
bottom of a flight.

● Pitch or slept. It is the angle which the line of nosing of the stairs
makes with the horizontal.

● Soffit. It is the under surface of a stair.

Metal Staircase

● Metal elements such as railings may be combined with

other materials, or entire staircases can be constructed
of metal.
● External fire escape stairs are generally made of metal.
● Commonly used metals are cast iron, bronze and mild
steel.
● Used only as emergency stairs.
● Mostly used in factories, godowns, workshops, etc.
Important Features of Metal Stairs

● Stringers are usually of channel section.

Straight Staircase

This functional, cost-effective and straightforward

Straight Staircase with Landing
design is the most common, as it allows simple and
convenient travel from one level to another. One
long flight eventually have to turn back on itself in
some way due to height restrictions.

Landing
Winder Staircase

This type of staircase includes a ninety(single-

winder) or hundred or eighty degree turn(double-
winder), achieved by the use of wedge-shaped
stairs rather than a landing. Winder stairs can be
used to achieve interesting and ornate architectural
features and are inherently safer than spiral
staircase.
Double Winder Staircase
Quarter-Landing Staircase

Quarter-landing stairs include ninety degree turn,

like single winder, but they include a flat landing
section rather than wedge-shaped stairs. That
requires fewer stairs in flight and makes them safer
Quarter-Landing Staircase
and more easily accessible.
Half-Landing Staircase

Half-landing Staircase includes two parallel flight

having landing halfway. This is similar to double
winder staircase having the landing halfway to the
height.

Quarter-Landing Staircase
Curved Staircase

Curved staircase tend to favour aesthetic over

functionality. The angle of the flight will resemble
an arc with no right angles. This means that all stairs
will be wedged to some degree to account for the
flight. These types of designs tend to be elegant in
nature, preferred for use in home and particular

office applications.
Spiral Staircase

Spiral staircases are also curved, but in a much

tighter arc, eventually coming a full 360 degrees,
resembling a circle. They also favour aesthetics over
functionality, but have been very useful in the past
for placing a staircase in tight places.
ADVANTAGES OF METAL
STAIRCASE
1.Versatile
If you are interested in a straight, curved or spiral
staircase, metal allows you to consider endless design
options. Ornate railings and modern designs are simple
to create, making it more than possible for your
staircase to be the centerpiece of your home .
2.Easy to Install
Thanks to its flexibility, metal staircases are much easier
to install than their completely wooden counterparts.
With reduced construction costs, you will experience
savings when building a metal staircase while adding
value to your home or business in the long run.

3.Durable
While hardwood and carpet will show signs of wear
rather quickly in highly trafficked areas, metal will
maintain its attractive sheen for years to come. Especially
beneficial outdoors, metal staircases can withstand high
amounts of pressure, helping to assure your steps will not
warp even after the coldest of winters.
4.Low Maintenance:

Never worry about sealing, painting or vacuuming

your staircase again. With a metal staircase inside
your home or business, regular maintenance is a
thing of the past. Maintenance is also simpler
outdoors than even before. Just sweep or shovel off
your stairs and feel confident that guests will be able
to navigate them with ease.
DISADVANTAGES OF METAL
STAIRCASE
1 .CORROSION:
● Corrosion is one of the major concerns of people and it can
appear even if the staircase is treated and protected with a
special coating.
● This problem usually occurs to outdoor staircases. Choosing high
quality material will make sure that you will not have worries and
your staircase will not suffer rust.
● To preserve their appearance, you need to coat them with
protective sealants which will increase the maintenance costs.
● In addition, treating a metallic staircase is a laborious process as
the metal should be sanded with sandpaper.
2. NOISE:
● Noise is, probably, the biggest disadvantage of metal
stairs.
● When walking on the steps the noise can be loud and
unpleasant.

3. Cost
● Custom made metal stairs in various decorative styles
will have higher prices.
● The more decorative elements, the higher the cost.
● depending on the complexity of designt he price tag of
these staircases can be significantly higher compared to
a wooden staircase.
4.Problems while installing:
● Such problems may occur if you have not considered the
dimensions of your staircase.
● This is a typical problem with interior staircases, so you need to
consider how the staircase will come into the building.
● It is necessary that bulky structures do not damage walls, doors or
other elements of your home in the process of installation.

5.Welding seams:
● If not done professionally, the welds may look rough and even ruin
the appearance of your metal stairs.
● It is advisable that you hire professionals to install your staircase .
● If you buy pre-fabricated models, pay attention to the quality of
the welds.
