What is textbook

 A textbook or coursebook i s a manual of instruction in any branch of


study.Textbooks are produced according to the demands of educational
institutions.Although most textbooks are only published in printed format, many
are now available as online electronic books.
Meaning of textbook

 ►Textbook is the standard book, used as a tool of teaching, and learning


organized for instructional purpose related with particular subject of curriculum
organized for use of students and teachers. Textbook serves as a guide for a
teacher and a student as well.
Importance of textbook

 It present in concrete form the limited portion of the language/any subject to be


taught in a given time.
 It help student for self study.
 • It also serve as index for academic achievement.
 It serve as memory aid for a teachers.
 • It help in supplementing pupils learning experience.
Function of national textbook

 To design the layout the board national policy relatedto textbooks


 Review textbooks time to time
 Identical and achievable content of education for alllevels
 Production of model textbook
 Production of Standard books for selected discipline
Role of textbook board

• A Provincial Committee duly represented by the Education authorities, Textbook Boards, private sector and others
are considered necessary,
they are formed to select and prescribe textbooks for use in public schools in the respective province or areas of
jurisdiction.
• As part of the review and approval process, Textbook Boards seek a no objection certificate from Federal Ministry
of Education, Curriculum
Wing, which is the competent authority to certify that a particular textbook is compatible with National
Curriculum.
• Federal and Provincial Governments are subjected to support capacity building of the Textbook Boards for their
modified facilitating, regulating, controlling and monitoring functions
Supporting the development of text book by
publisher

• Textbook Boards make available their resource centers (Resource Centers are established at
Federal and Provincial levels under the respective Textbook Boards, Curriculum Wing, and
National Book Foundation for reference and resource material and training activities) to
publishers
and arrange for training and hands-on guidance and assistance to publishers in textbook
development.

• Publishers are allowed to use the materials contained in the package as 'raw material' in the
development of textbooks and school reading and learning materials under the new curriculum.
Development of School Reading & Learning Materials
(Other than textbooks) By Publishers

• The Textbook Boards invite national/provincial publishers to submit manuscripts and


samples of school reading and learning materials (other than textbooks) to the Textbook
Boards for review and certification as 'recommended learning materials' with age-wise and
grade-wise
classification.
• Private schools are not bound by the recommendation certificate of Textbook Boards, but
are free in their decisions to purchase and use
school reading and learning materials (other than textbooks).
Governament schools & private schools

 Governament schools
• Textbook Boards purchase, from the publisher whose textbook is selected, a print license for a certain number of copies
and a certain period of time or as may be considered appropriate for free distribution in the government schools through
the Education Department processes.
• Textbook Boards may allocate the printing of the selected textbook in the manner as may be considered appropriate.
• Private schools
• Private schools decide and choose from the approved and certified textbooks by the Textbook Boards according to
quality and price, and purchase textbooks directly from the publisher, i.e. printing and binding are part of the publishers
business.
