District Cooling
Meinhardt was the Principal Consultant for the Design and Build Contractor, Samsung Corporation for the Phoenix District Cooling Plant 1 & 2 at Abu Dhabi, UAE. The project comprised of two district cooling plants providing chilled water supply to surrounding buildings with a total capacity of 15,000 and 7,500 refrigeration tonnes respectively. The two central cooling plants use water cooled electric driven centrifugal chillers and associated auxiliary equipment like cooling towers and pumps for production and distribution of chilled water to various buildings via a network of underground piping system. Plant 1 and 2 will have 8x1875RT and 6x1250RT chillers respectively with a supply and return chilled water temperature of 4.4C and 13C. On site power generation using natural gas engine driven generators was provided for the primary electrical supply to both plants with peak period backup from the utility company (ADDC). A chilled water thermal storage tank with capacity of 15,000 ton-hours will be installed for Plant No. 1 for load levelling purpose as well as reducing the capacity of the chillerplant.

Provision of: Environmental monitoring and management strategies; Civil engineering for pavements, sewer, water and storm water management; water sensitive urban design and implementation; structural engineering; power and gas network design; and construction management. Significant issues have arisen during the master planning and detailed design phases due to the age of the site and lack of accurate infrastructure asset records. Extensive investigations to establish existing infrastructure capabilities and allow for the design of upgrades to meet projected demands was undertaken. Storm water management strategies have been developed and implemented to attenuate flood flows within the site and to treat runoff prior to discharge into the watercourse.
