About the YOGA

 Yoga is the physical, mental and spiritual practices which


originated in ancient India with a view to attain a state of
permanent peace of mind in order to experience one’s
true self.
 Yoga is a mind and body practice.
 Various styles of yoga combine physical postures,
breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation
Terminology & Purpose

In Vedic Sanskrit, the


meaning of word Yoga is
“to add”, “to join”, “to
unite” or “to attach”.

The ultimate goal of Yoga is


Moksha (liberation) through
the exact definition of what
form this takes depends on
the philosophical or
theological system with
which it is conjugated.
History of Yoga
 Yoga has a very long history and in
terms of legacy it is as old as human
civilisation. Its history is also linked
with the vedas and upanishads.

 Yoga had a special place during the


Indus Valley Civilisation (2000 B.C).

 The word yoga is frequently referred in all the four Vedas


Rigveda, Yujurveda, Samveda and Atharvaveda.

 Moksha is the ultimate goal of yoga, which is well


explained in the Upanishads.
Schools of YOGA
The basic goal of yoga is to attain bliss and to provide true
knowledge about human beings. To attain the goals,
various thoughts, ideas and opinions were given by seers
which are known as the schools of yoga.

 Karma Yoga (Path of Action): This stream of yoga


emphasizes the following—
i. Karma as duty
ii. Karma Sukaushalam
iii.Nishkama Karma

 Jnana Yoga (Path of Knowledge)

 Raja Yoga (Path of Psychic Control)

 Bhakti yoga (Path of Devotion)


Yoga Techniques
There are so many different types of Yoga, some listed below:

 Yoga for Wellness – Shodhanakriya, Neti (Jala neti, Sutra


neti), Kapalbhati, Agnisara

 Surya Namaskara or Sun Salutation

 Yogasana - Tadasana, Vrikshasana, Padahastasana, Ardha


Chakrasana, Trikonasana, Padmasana, Vajrasana, etc….

 Pranayama- Nadishodhana Pranayama, Ujjayi Pranayama

 Bandhas - Jalandhara Bandha, Uddiyana Bandha

 Dhyana
Benefits of Yoga
Reception in west
 Gurus from India introduced Yoga to the west following
the success of Swami Vivekananda in the late 19th and
early 20th century.
 In 1980’s , yoga became popular as a system of physical
exercise across the western world. This form of Yoga is
often called Hatha Yoga.
Accreditation & Records
 21st June is longest day of the year in Norhern Hemisphre.
 Prime Minister Narendra Modi Suggested in UN speech to
keep as International Yoga day.
 It received support from 177 nations, the highest number
of co-sponsors for any UN Resolution.
 Finally, 21st June is declared as International Yoga day by
UN.
 Guinness World Records details:

 Date: 21st June 2015


 Location- Raj Path, New Delhi
 Participant- 35, 985 at one venue and 84 nationalities
 No. of Yoga Assan performed- 21

“Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family”


This year, the theme for the event is “Yoga at Home and Yoga
with Family”, in line with global concerns around the Covid-
19 pandemic, emphasizing the importance of maintaining
good health, but within constraints of social distancing.
