Ilocos
The Ilocos Region is located in
the northwest of Luzon, bordering
the regions of the Cordillera
Administrative Region, Cagayan
Valley, and Central Luzon.

It is composed of provinces, namely: Ilocos norte,


Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan.
A. Inabel
Abel in Ilocano
refers to the
process of weaving
while inabel is the
final woven product
made from cotton
and other natural
fibers.

Inabel undergoes beating


the cotton balls or
binatbatan using bamboo
sticks to separate the seeds
during the initial stage.

These traditional threads are dyed from the sap


of the black plum called sagut.
vigan
Vigan is unique for having
preserved much of its
Hispanic colonial
character, particularly its
grid street pattern and
historic urban lay out.

It is considered as the best preserved example


of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia
established in the 16th century.
B. Burnay Pottery
Another industrial craft practiced in the
western part of Vigan is the craft of
making earthenwares or burnay
jars/pottery.

During the old times, burnay
jars were used for tea
drinking and as containers
for salt, brown sugar, water,
local wine basi, and bagoong
(fermented fish). Nowadays,
people buy them as
decorations in their gardens
and homes.
pangasinan
Pangasinan is located
on the western area of
Luzon along the
Lingayen Gulf and the
West Philippine Sea.

The name Pangasinan means “place


for salt” or “place of salt-making”.
Another name for the
region is “Caboloan”.
The word bolo refers to
the bamboo species
abundant in the interior
areas of the province
and favoured material
to use to weave light
baskets and winnowing
plates called bilao.
Another famous crafts
include the smoothly
weaved bolinao mats
made from buri or raffia
leaves, the bamboo
crafts of San Carlos,
bagoong, and the tasty
tapang bangus.
Bolinao mats or banig
These are simple hand-woven mats usually
used in several Southeast Asian countries
like Philippines for sleeping. They are
created by dyeing strips of buri which are
woven to produce a design.

San Carlos City is popular in the bamboo


industry. It has its own bamboo market
where bamboo products like nipa huts,
baskets, lamp shades, furniture and
cabinets are on display.
La Union
La Union is bordered by Ilocos
Sur to the north, Benguet to
the east, Pangasinan to the
south and to the west by the
shores of the South China Sea.
It is known for its well-crafted
dalikan or cooking stove
traditionally handmade by
locals. It is also known for its
soft broom industry made of
natural corn fibers that are
expertly bound and highly
durable.
