The experience gathered cut across the

following sections;
 Hatchery
 Breeding farm
 Feed mill

HATCHERY

WHAT IS A HATCHERY?
This is a place where eggs received from
the breeder farm are incubated and hatched
into healthy day old chicks. Eggs are kept in
clean condition and at correct temperature
and relative humidity to achieve best
hatchability.
Things done in the hatchery;
i. Sorting:-sorting is done in the egg room to check for the egg
quality. ,eggs within the size range of 47g minimum and 70g
maximum are selected for setting and others sold as table
eggs.
Parameters for selection of hatch
able eggs
For selecting hatch able eggs,
some parameters are considered.
These include:
• Cleanliness
• Shell quality
• Shape
• Colour
• Size
ii. Storing in the cold room:- the selected eggs are
stored in the cold room to hinder the growth of the
embryo for maximum of 5 days because the longer
the egg stays in the cold room, the lower the
hatchability.
iii. Pre warming:- the eggs are taken out from the cold room
and pre-warmed for 12 hours before putting in the setter
iv. Setting:- the eggs are set in the setter to start incubation
for 18 days in other for the egg embryo to develop fully
FUMIGATION
Before eggs were set in to the setter, they
moved into the fumigation room and pre-
warmed for
about 8-10 hours to avoid embryonic shock.
When shell get dry, they are fumigated using
potassium permanganate and
Formaldehyde. Eggs are not fumigated when
wet.
v. Candling:-eggs that has used 18days in the
setter are brought out and candled to
remove the infertile and dead in shell eggs
from the fertile ones. This process is done by
exposing the eggs to a beam of light. The
fertile ones arranged in the hatcher basket
and are immediately transferred to the
hatcher. The infertile ones are taken out of
the hatchery.
vi. Hatching:-eggs arranged in the hatcher
use 3 days before hatching into chicks. vii.
Chicks’ holding room:-chicks hatched from
the hatcher are sexed, counted and boxed at
the holding room and transferred to the
vaccination room.
• Colour sexing;

colourof of the
There are majorly 3 types
sexing which are birds are used
here to sex them.
This method is
usually used for
Nera breed and
Isa brown breed.
SEXING CONTD.
• Feather sexing; this is using the
feather to sex the birds and is usually
employed when sexing Ambalik
breed.

• Vent sexing; this is the most

technical of all the sexing methods
and it requires expertise. It is usually
used in sexing broiler breeder i.e
parent stocks of broiler chicks.
Commercial broilers are not usually
sexed because they are not used for
breeding and will be killed before 12
weeks of age.
viii. Vaccination:-pullets chicks are vaccinated against
Marek’s disease.
Ix. Dispatching:-this is when the chicks are supplied to
the customers after being vaccinated.
Preparation for Vaccination
 The automatic syringe, vaccine discharging
hose were sterilized.
 The vaccines that were kept in liquid nitrogen
jar were removed and thawed in a water
bath of 27°C for 90seconds.
 4ml Gentamycin, an antibiotic was mixed
with 400ml of the Marek's vaccine sterile
diluent.
 The vaccine vial was knocked at the head to
release the trapped Vaccine before breaking
it
 The vaccine was constituted into the diluent
gently and the vaccine vial were rinsed with
diluent again.
 The discharging hose was then fixed on the
diluent bag and the automatic injector was
calibrated to 0.4ml per shot.
TRANSPORTATION OF
CHICKS TO THE MARKET

• The transportation of the chicks is done in the cool hour of

the day i.e very early in the morning of late in the evening.
