EFFECTS OF THE
SACRAMENT OF
BAPTISM
Baptism has six primary effects, which are all supernatural graces:

1.The removal of the guilt of both Original Sin (the sin imparted to all mankind
by the Fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden) and personal sin (the
sins that we have committed ourselves).
2.The remission of all punishment that we owe because of sin, both temporal
(in this world and in Purgatory) and eternal (the punishment that we would
suffer in hell).
3.The infusion of grace in the form of sanctifying grace (the life of God within
us); the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit; and the three theological virtues.
4.Becoming a part of Christ.
5.Becoming a part of the Church, which is the Mystical Body of Christ on
earth.
6.Enabling participation in the sacraments, the priesthood of all believers,
and the growth in grace.
EFFECTS OF THE
SACRAMENT OF
CONFIRMATION
1. Confirmation grants us the special grace by which our faith is
deepened and strengthened, and we become concerned not
only for our own spiritual needs, but for those of others.

2. By Confirmation we also receive that grace Jesus promised

to His Apostles: “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes upon you, and you shall be witnesses for me… even to
the very ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

3. The character of Confirmation is a spiritual and indelible sign

which marks the Christian as a soldier in the army of Christ.
4. Unites us more firmly to Jesus Christ.
5. Increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us (see the
Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit).
6. Renders our bond with the Church [the Body of
Christ] more perfect.
7. Gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to
spread and defend the faith by word and action as true
witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ
boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross.
EFFECTS OF THE
SACRAMENT OF
EUCHARIST
⇨ We become MORE united with Christ

⇨ We are separated from our sinfulness

⇨ Our venial sins are LITERALLY wiped away.

⇨ Our communion with other Christians is strengthened.

⇨ We are reminded of those less fortunate than us.

EFFECTS OF THE
SACRAMENT OF
RECONCILIATION
⇨ Reconciliation with God by which the penitent recovers
grace
⇨ Reconciliation with the Church
⇨ Remission of the eternal punishment incurred by mortal
sins
⇨ Remission, at least in part, of temporal punishments
resulting from sin
⇨ Peace and serenity of conscience and spiritual
consolation
⇨ An increase of spiritual strength for the Christian battle
EFFECTS OF THE
SACRAMENT OF
ANNOINTING OF
THE SICK
Many Catholics believe that, by adhering to the
sacrament of anointing of the sick, they will achieve:

⇨ Spiritual comfort - sick people who are anointed

receive God’s grace via the Holy Spirit.
⇨ Forgiveness of sins - when they die, they will be
healed, and all sin removed.
⇨ Strength and courage to accept illness - the person
must have faith in God’s plan for their salvation.
⇨ Relief from anxiety - they will no longer be anxious
about death.
EFFECTS OF THE
SACRAMENT OF
HOLY ORDERS
The bishop and priest are configured to Christ as the Head of the
Church in Christ's threefold office of priest, prophet, and king in this
Sacrament. This Sacrament conforms the deacon to Christ in the role
of servant.
The Sacrament of Holy Orders, like Baptism and Confirmation,
bestows on the recipient an indelible or permanent character. This
means that you will never be able to receive this Sacrament again.
The indelible character serves as a constant reminder to the bishop,
priest, or deacon that the vocation and mission he received on the
day of his ordination has left an indelible mark on him.
Like Baptism and Confirmation, which also confer a permanent
character, Holy Orders is never repeated.
⇨ A bishop is given the grace to teach in the name of Christ; to sanctify
the Church through the celebration of the Sacraments; to guide,
govern, and defend the Church; and to be a sign of the unity of the
Church.

⇨ A priest is given the grace to proclaim the Gospel and preach, to

celebrate the Sacraments (except Holy Orders), and to shepherd the
people entrusted to him.

⇨ A deacon in the Latin Church is ordained to proclaim the Gospel and

preach, to baptize, to assist the bishop or priest in the celebration of
the Eucharist, to assist at and bless marriages, to preside at funerals,
and to serve the community through works of charity.
EFFECTS OF THE
SACRAMENT OF
MATRIMONY
⇨ The principle effect of the grace of the sacrament serves
to strengthen the couple's unity and deepen their love and
affection so that their loving service assist them in growing
closer to God.
⇨ The first effect of the Sacrament of Matrimony is the gift of
the bond between the spouses. “The consent by which the
spouses mutually give and receive one another is sealed
by God himself” (CCC, no. 1639). “The marriage bond has
been established by God himself in such a way that a
marriage concluded and consummated between baptized
persons can never be dissolved” (CCC, no. 1640).
⇨ The grace of this Sacrament perfects the love of
husband and wife, binds them together in fidelity, and
helps them welcome and care for children. Christ is
the source of this grace and he dwells with the
spouses to strengthen their covenant promises, to
bear each other’s burdens with forgiveness and
kindness, and to experience ahead of time the
“wedding feast of the Lamb”
