INTRODUCTION
The term "medieval"
(originally
spelled mediaeval) comes
from Latin, meaning "middle
age.".
When Were the Middle Ages?

Most scholars associate the beginning of the

medieval period with the collapse of the
Roman empire, which occurred in 476.
Books in the Medieval Period

Spelling and grammar were inconsistent in these

early writings, which can make them hard to read; it
wasn't until the invention of the printing press in
1410 that spelling began to be standardized.
Literature in the Medieval Period
 Much of the early literature of this period
consists of sermons, prayers, lives of saints,
and homilies.

 Another common theme in medieval

literature is courtly love.
Books in the Medieval Period

Books (and the parchment itself) were often made

by monks, and it was a time- and labor-intensive
process.
The oral traditions are the story of:
 “Noah” the great flood
 “Cain and Abel”
 “Adam and Eve”
 “Tower of Babel”
-To avoid theft, the books were chained to the
libraries during the medieval period.
- Written literary works started with the
monks’ lesson books for the young people
during the old English period.
-Bishop of Sherbome and Aldhelm (640-700
A.D) had also written books for children.
-William Caxton (1476) created the first printer and
published the fables of Aesop, the Legend of
King Arthur and his Knights, the song of Roland
an old French epic, the heroism of El Cid, the
valor Beowulf from the Norse.
