LESSON 2:
AMERICAN SQUARE

GENTLEMEN LADIES
Formal: suit and tie Formal: cocktail gown or evening dress
Semi-formal: slacks with dress shirt and Semi-formal: dinner dress and flowing
Tie; vest or a sweater that shows the tie pants
Dressy casual: cotton slacks with solid Dressy casual: conservative and toned-
color T-shirt, mock turtleneck, or polo down appearance

PERSONAL GROOMING
BEFORE DANCE DURING AND AFTER THE DANCE
Take a shower and use your deodorant. Always check your grooming. Freshen up
in the bathroom during active dance.
Brush your teeth and use mouth wash. For men, bring extra shirt in case you
need to change.
Avoid food that produce strong odors.
Do not smoke. It causes bad breath and
odor to clothes.

I. Music A
1. Starting with the R foot, stamp four times in place.
2. Clap your hands in front four times.
3. Honor your partner twice. Step R foot sideward (ct. 1), close L to R
4M (ct. 2), and bow to partner (cts. 3-4). Step L foot sideward (ct. 1)
, close R to L (ct. 2), and bow to partner (cts. 3-4).
4. Repeat all (a-c).
II. Music B
1. Starting R foot, take four steps forward (cts. 1-4) and four 4M steps
back to places (cts. 1-4) with all hands joined.
2. Repeat all (a-c)
III. Music A
1. Repeat figure 1 (a) and (b).
2. Swing partner (buzz steps or skip steps).
3. Repeat (a) and (b).
IV. Music B
1. Execute the promenade counterclockwise, sixteen walking steps
with your partner. The girls stand at the right side of the partner
holding a skating position. (perform the steps as many times as
desired.)
