BASKETBALL
Basketball is a team sport that is played on a
rectangular court with two hoops or baskets
mounted at either end. The objective of the
game is to score points by shooting a ball
through the opponent's basket while
preventing the opposing team from doing the
same.

HISTORY OF BASKETBALL

• In 1891, James Naismith, a physical education instructor at the YMCA

International Training School in the United States, was faced with the
dilemma of finding an indoor game for the students at the school.

• Naismith recalled a game from his younger days called "duck-on-a-rock" and
adapted it to create basketball.

• The first game of basketball was played using a soccer ball and two peach
baskets nailed several feet high as goals on a court just half the size of a
regulation court. The baskets still had their bottoms, so a long pole was used
to poke the ball out every time it was shot into the basket.
HISTORY OF BASKETBALL

• Dribbling was not part of the original game.

• Basketball quickly became popular and was introduced in many

countries, becoming an Olympic sport in 1936.

• The YMCA of America introduced basketball to the Philippines,

where it quickly became the most popular sport, dominating the
Far Eastern Games basketball tournament in the 1910s to early
1930s.

• Point Guard: Typically the shortest player on the team, the point guard is responsible for bringing the ball
up the court, directing the offense, and setting up plays. They are usually quick, agile, and good ball
handlers and passers.

• Shooting Guard: Often the team's best shooter, the shooting guard is responsible for scoring points by
making shots from the perimeter or driving to the basket. They are usually taller and more athletic than
point guards, but also need to be able to handle the ball well.

• Small Forward: The small forward is a versatile player who can score from the perimeter, drive to the
basket, and rebound. They are usually taller than shooting guards and point guards, and often have a
good combination of size, speed, and athleticism.

• Power Forward: Typically the team's best rebounder and inside scorer, the power forward is responsible
for playing near the basket, setting screens, and boxing out opponents to secure rebounds. They are
usually taller and stronger than small forwards, but also need to be able to move quickly and shoot from
the perimeter.

• Center: The tallest player on the team, the center is responsible for playing near the basket on both
offense and defense. They are usually the team's best shot blocker and rebounder, and are expected to
score points by making shots from close range. Centers also need to be physically strong and able to
move quickly to defend against opponents.
BASKETBALL eQuipmENTS

SKILLS WHEN PLAYING BASKETBALL

A. DRIBBLING
Dribbling involves using your hand to bounce the ball on the ground
repeatedly, and you can do it whether you're standing still or on the
move. However, it's important to avoid hitting or slapping the ball
with your palm while dribbling. If you hold the ball in your hand or
hands, you need to either pass or shoot it. Additionally, it's not
permitted to start dribbling again after you've just stepped from a
previous dribble.
MUST REMEMBER WHEN DRIBBLING THE BALL

1. Spread out your fingers.

2. Do the proper wrist movement.

3. Try not to look at the ball while executing the skill.

4. The lower you dribble/bounce the ball, the better control you have.
SKILLS WHEN PLAYING BASKETBALL

B. SHOOTING
To earn a point in basketball, you must aim and throw the ball
through the hoop. Consistent practice is necessary to improve your
shooting ability. When shooting, various factors need to be taken
into account, such as your location on the court, the distance
between you and the basket, the proximity of opposing players, and
the trajectory of the ball.
MUST REMEMBER WHEN SHOOTING THE BALL

1. Hold the ball with two hands.

2. Push the ball with your dominant hand (right/left) and being guided by the non-dominant hand
(right/left).

3. Bend your knees slightly for power

4. Straighten your legs before the shot release is made.

5. Push the ball towards the basket.

6. Make a follow through

SKILLS WHEN PLAYING BASKETBALL

C. PASSING

Passing is the movement of the ball from one player to a receiver in

the same team. Proper coordination among the players in a team is
needed to achieve a successful pass.
Kinds of Passes in Basketball
CHEST PASS

This is the most common pass

done by players in which the ball is
held by both hands from the chest
of the passer, who does a straight
pass and throws with a snap of the
wrists, to the chest of the receiver.
bounce pass

The ball is given to a teammate by

bouncing the ball on the floor a
meter away from the receiver. It will
be easier for the receiver to catch
the ball if the ball bounces at waist
level.

Overhead Pass

The ball comes from overhead of the

passer to the chest of the receiver
Underpass Pass
This is a kind of pass that is usually executed when a passer is
closely guarded

Baseball Pass
The ball is thrown by the passer overhead. This
kind of pass is very difficult to control as it is a long
pass that travels the length of the basketball court.
The passer must execute it accurately to enable
the receiver to catch it.
Observe the following while doing the passing
skills.

1. Pass the ball snappily (fast).

2. Position one foot forward, either right or left

3. Make a follow through

4. Make sure the receiver knows that the ball is being thrown to him/ her.
