What is ART?

ART comes from the ancient Latin “ars” which

means a “craft or specialized form of skill, like
carpentry or smithing or surgery” (Collingwood,
1938).
What is ART?

In making art, how important is

experience?
What is ART?
The Artist: A Tale from China

There was once a king who loved the graceful curves of the rooster. He
asked the court artist to paint a picture of a rooster for him. For one year
he waited and still this order was not fulfilled. In a rage, he stomped
into the studio and demanded to see the artist.

Quickly the artist brought out paper, paint, and brush. In five minutes a
perfect picture of a rooster emerged from her skillful brush. The king
turned purple with anger, saying, "If you can paint a perfect picture of a
rooster in five minutes, why did you keep me waiting for over a year?“

"Come with me," begged the artist. She led the king to her storage
room. Paper was piled from the floor to the ceiling. On every sheet was
a painting of a rooster.

"Your Majesty," explained the artist,

"it took me more than one year to learn how to paint a perfect rooster in
five minutes."
What is ART?

Art has the capacity to produce an intended

result from carefully planned steps or methods.

Age is not a factor in determining art.

“An art is not good because it is old, it is old

because it is good.”

Ex. Ibong Adarna & Florante at Laura

ART IS UNIVERSAL

Art has been crafted by all people regardless of

origin, time, place, and that it stayed on because
it is liked and enjoyed by people continuously.
ART IS UNIVERSAL

Art is universal because it embodies universal

emotions and makes it relatable.
ART IS NOT NATURE

Art is man’s expression of his reception of

nature.
ART IS NOT NATURE

Art is man’s way of interpreting nature.

ART IS NOT NATURE
ART IS NOT NATURE

In making art, the process is basically:

Reception/perception
Interpretation
Expression
ART IS NOT NATURE

Art is made by man, whereas nature is

given around us.
ART IS NOT NATURE

What we find in nature should not be

expected to be present in art, too.
ART INVOLVES EXPERIENCE
By experience, we mean the actual doing of
something, (Dudley et al., 1960).

“A painter cannot claim he is one if he has never

held a paint brush, just as a sculptor is not a
sculptor if he does not know what a chisel is.”
ART INVOLVES EXPERIENCE

A work of art then cannot be abstracted

from actual doing. In order to know what
an artwork is, we have to sense it, see or
hear it.
ART INVOLVES EXPERIENCE

One should also underscore that every

experience with art is accompanied by
some emotion.
Art Appreciation: Creativity,
Imagination, and Expression
Art appreciation as a way of life
• In cultivating an appreciation of art,
one should also exercise and develop
his taste for things that are fine and
beautiful.
THE ROLE OF CREATIVITY IN ART MAKING

o Creativity requires thinking outside the box.

o In art, creativity is what sets apart one artwork
from another.
When can we say that something is
creative?
o When we have not seen anything like it
o When it is out of the ordinary
o When it is not just a copy or imitation
of someone’s work.
THERE IS
ORIGINALITY!
Art as a Product of imagination, Imagination as a Product of Art

o “Imagination is more important than

knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we
now know and understand, while imagination
embraces the entire world, and all there ever
be to know and understand.” – Albert Einstein
Art as a Product of imagination, Imagination as a Product of Art

Art as a Product of imagination, Imagination

as a Product of Art
Art as a Product of imagination, Imagination as a Product of Art

Art is a product of what we perceive and

imagine. At the same time, imagination is a
product of the influences of existing art forms

Old-Creation-New
 Art is a product of man’s creativity,
imagination, and expression
“ The role of art as a creative work is to depict the
world in a completely different light and perspective” –
John-Paul Sartre
ART AS EXPRESSION

“Sometimes when words are not enough,

art takes it place in expressing what we
feel.”
ART AS EXPRESSION

Using art as an expression may come in the

forms of visual art, film, performance art,
poetry performance, architecture, dance,
literary art, theater, and applied arts
