SHE BECAME PRESIDENT

O A shy and supportive housewife


O Having 5 children and a journalist
husband
O Her husband was Benigno “Ninoy”
Aquino Jr., who become an
outspoken critics of Ferdinand
Marcos regime.
O In 1978, Marcos decided Parliamentary
elections. This cause the first imposition
of Martial Law which leaded Ninoy to
fight and campaign democracy even he
already expected Marcos to win . The
public overwhlemingly supported Ninoy,
that led him to jailed.
O Ninoy’s health was suffering from the
long imprisonment and by the US
president Jimmy Carter, Marcos allowed
the Aquino to go in medical exile in
States by 1980, they moved in Boston.

O Until August 21, 1983, Ninoy returned to


Manila which got him assassinated.
O The death of Ninoy bring Corazon and the
people to reconcile which she start to led the
protest and political demonstrations that made
her the center of anti-Marcos politics in the
Philippines.

O In 1986, she joined the new presidential


elections and won on Feb. 25, 1986 as the result
of People Power Revolution and became the
first female president of the Philippines.

oath.”

2. “The task had fallen on my shoulders to


continue offering the democratic alternative
to our people. “
3. ”But I was not fighting for lawyers but for the
people in whose intelligence I had implicit
faith.”
4. “Still, we fought for honor, and, if only for
honor, we shall pay”.

5. ”Today, I say, join us, America, as we build a


new home for democracy, another haven for
the oppressed, so it may stand as a shining
testament of our two nation’s commitment to
freedom”.
