MANAGEMENT
AND PREVENTION

PURPOSE

• The purpose of this presentation is to educate patients and family members with a
newly diagnosed urinary tract infection on how to manage symptoms and prevent
recurrence.
TA R G E T A U D I E N C E

• Adult learners newly diagnosed with UTI in the community.


• Adult learners requiring hospitalization for UTI.
• Adult learners with recurrent UTI or aiming to prevent a recurrence UTI.
• Family members taking care of those with a UTI.
OBJECTIVES

• Determine those who would benefit from education over urinary tract infections.
• Describe the pathophysiology of a urinary tract infection.
• Inform patients of the treatment plan they may be prescribed due to a UTI.
• Provide information over self care and ways to reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs.
• Educate patients on when to seek medical care when already diagnosed with a UTI.

• An infection in the urinary system.


• The most common type of UTI is an infection of the bladder, this is referred to as
cystitis.
• UTIs can happen to anyone, however they are more common in those who have internal
reproductive organs. 60% of people with internal reproductive organs will experience a
UTI in their lifetime. (Urology Care Foundation, 2021)

SYMPTOMS

• Frequent, painful, or a burning sensation when urinating


• Cloudy urine or urine that has an abnormal smell
• Difficulty urinating
• Blood in urine
• Some UTIs can be asymptomatic or cause confusion. This is more common in elderly
patients.

• When diagnosing a UTI your provider will have a conversation with you over what
symptoms you are experiencing.
• The you may need to provide a urine sample. This will help the provider determine if
there is a UTI present and what antibiotics are appropriate.
• Your provider may also recommend an over the counter medication to manage pain and
discomfort.

• When taking oral antibiotics it is very important to take the entire dosage you were
prescribed. This helps kill the bacteria causing the infection and helps prevent it from
reoccurring.
• In some cases IV antibiotics will be needed to help clear the infection.
PREVENTION

• Keep hydrated (6-8 glasses of 8oz water a day).


• Urinate after being sexually active.
• Do not delay urination.
• Wipe front to back when using the restroom or providing urinary catheter care.
• Stay physically active and maintain regular bowel movements.

WHEN TO SEEK ADDITIONAL HELP

• If you are experiencing flank pain, pain located in the middle of the back on the left or
right side. This may mean the infection has spread to the kidneys.
• If you are experiencing high fevers (~100.4 F or 38 C and above).
• If you are not feeling better a few days after starting treatment.
