PURPOSE
• The purpose of this presentation is to educate patients and family members with a
newly diagnosed urinary tract infection on how to manage symptoms and prevent
recurrence.
TA R G E T A U D I E N C E
• Determine those who would benefit from education over urinary tract infections.
• Describe the pathophysiology of a urinary tract infection.
• Inform patients of the treatment plan they may be prescribed due to a UTI.
• Provide information over self care and ways to reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs.
• Educate patients on when to seek medical care when already diagnosed with a UTI.
W H AT I S A U R I N A RY T R A C T I N F E C T I O N ?
• When diagnosing a UTI your provider will have a conversation with you over what
symptoms you are experiencing.
• The you may need to provide a urine sample. This will help the provider determine if
there is a UTI present and what antibiotics are appropriate.
• Your provider may also recommend an over the counter medication to manage pain and
discomfort.
• When taking oral antibiotics it is very important to take the entire dosage you were
prescribed. This helps kill the bacteria causing the infection and helps prevent it from
reoccurring.
• In some cases IV antibiotics will be needed to help clear the infection.
PREVENTION
• If you are experiencing flank pain, pain located in the middle of the back on the left or
right side. This may mean the infection has spread to the kidneys.
• If you are experiencing high fevers (~100.4 F or 38 C and above).
• If you are not feeling better a few days after starting treatment.
