SEPAK TAKRAW

ORIGIN

Sepak Takraw originated in Malaysia – particularly


in Malacca or Melaka, around 500 years ago. It
was known as Sepak Raga (sepak: kick; raga: refers to
the rattan ball) . A ball made of rattan is used. Sepak
Raga is also played in Brunei and Singapore.
NAME VARIATIONS

Due to it being played in many countries, there are many name variations.

Thailand: Sepak Takraw

Myanmar: Ching Long

Indonesia: Sepak Rago

Laos: Kator

Philippines: Sipa
ADDITIONAL INFO

Changes in the game were made during the visit of King George the
V in Negeri Sembilan, where it was played in a basketball court.
Badminton and Sepak Takraw share few similar rules.

During World War II, the game spread across the northern parts of
Malaysia, mainly in Penang where it became popular.

The fi rst offi cial competition was held on May 16, 1965. Since then,
it has been played over Malaysia. Some soccer players are even to
play due to the similar game rules.

HOW TO PLAY?

Sepak Takraw is played with two teams, called Regu and


Mississauga. Each Regu has 5 total players - 3 players on
the court and 2 substitutes. When playing the Regu format,
a match consists of 3 sets. A match is won when a team
wins 2 sets. Each set is played to 21 points. In Sepak
Takraw, you can't touch the ball with your hands or arms.
That means you have to use your feet, legs, and knees to
control the ball. Although it takes a bit of agility and
athleticism, there are some basic moves you can learn.
