Introduction To Physiotherapy In

Neurological Conditions

Dr Suraj B.Kanase
HOD Dep of Neurophysiotherapy
Krishna college of physiotherapy
• The field of neurology deals with the central and peripheral nervous
system and impairments in other systems related to the nervous
system disorders.
• Neurophysiotherapy has changed the face of rehabilitation.
• Historically, patients with neurological disorders were dealt with
compensatory approach by trying to use the unaffected parts.
• WHO developed the ICF, as an illness model to redefine the
rehabilitation approaches and shift the perspective from disablement
to enablement.

ROLE OF A PHYSIOTHERAPIST
Goals of Neuro-physiotherapist includes:
1. To analyze normal and abnormal movements.
2. To address wide range of impairments
3. To retard and prevent atrophy
4. To restore muscle mass and strength
5. Prevention and risk reduction training
6. providing rehabilitation services
7. Improving quality of life.
• Neurophysiotherapist needs sound knowledge of the following :

1. Basics of neuroanatomy and the functioning of the nervous system.

2. An overview of investigations and the drugs used.

3. Assessment techniques.

4. Knowledge of techniques used in physiotherapy.

5. Particular techniques needed for particular conditions.

6. Overall rehabilitation of neurological patient.

NEED FOR EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE

• There is need for appropriate and comprehensive assessment using

relevant outcome measures that are important to a patient from

quality of life perspective of the patient.

• Physiotherapists need to embrace the responsibility of using evidence

based , or at least scientifically acceptable , methods of intervention.

INTEGRATED FRAMEWORK

Physiotherapists should be able to :

 Identify the problem.

 Determine factors that may affect the solution.

 Synthesize the information.

 Predict outcomes.

 Plan a management strategy for the said problem.

• Management of neurological patient can be divided into following

phases:

1. History and interview

2. Examination

3. Evaluation

4. Planning

5. Intervention

6. Re- examination or follow up.

QUESTIONS
