INTRODUCTION
Evelyn Glennie is a multi-percussionist. She has attained mastery
over almost a thousand musical instruments despite being
hearing–impaired. She learnt to feel music through the body
instead of hearing it through the ears.
“God may have taken her hearing but he has given her back
something extraordinary. What we hear, she feels — far more
deeply than any of us. That is why she expresses music so
beautifully.”
Someone has commented this about Evelyn. He says that although
god took away her hearing power, she was impaired, but he gave
her an extraordinary thing and that was the sense of feeling. She
could feel very deeply. Far more deeply than the normal people.
And that is why she was able to express music so beautifully, so
well. She is a well-known multi-percussionist. She plays different
percussion instruments like xylophone, drums.
WHEN EVELYN LOST HER
HEARING
• when eight-year-old Evelyn was waiting to play the piano. “they called
her name and she did not movie, this incident showed her mother that
she did not hear.”
• When Evelyn was eleven years old, it was discovered that she had lost
her hearing power due to nerve damage. The specialist advised that she
wear hearing aids and be sent to a school for the deaf.
• On the contrary, Evelyn was determined to lead a normal life and follow
her interest in music, Although she was discouraged by her teachers.
THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF RON
FORBES
Although she was discouraged by her teachers, her potential was
noticed by master percussionist, Ron Forbes. He guided Evelyn to
feel music some other way than to hear it through her ears. This
worked well for Evelyn and she realized that she could sense
different sounds through different parts of her body.
Once she had overcome this hurdle, Evelyn began her career in
music. She got admission in the Royal Academy of Music, London
and scored the highest marks in the history of the academy. Evelyn
says that hard work and dedication towards her goal helped her
achieve success. Evelyn gives solo performances and even gives free
concerts for hospitals and schools. In the year 1991, she won the
Royal Philharmonic Society’s prestigious ‘Soloist of the Year Award.
Evelyn’s story is an inspiration for the differently-abled who are
motivated to fulfill their dreams like she did.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF EVELYN GLENNIE
She auditioned for the Royal Academy of Music and scored one of the
highest marks in the history of the academy.
In 1991 she was presented with the Royal Philharmonic Society’s
prestigious Soloist of the Year Award.
She got right to the top, the world’s most sought-after multi-
percussionist with a mastery of some thousand instruments, and hectic
international schedule.
Evelyn Glennie has accomplished more than most people twice her
age. She has brought percussion to the front of the orchestra, and
demonstrated that it can be very moving.
THE THEME OF THE POEM
From here we come to know the theme of the
story and the message we get from the story. The
story of Evelyn Glennie is a motivational story, it
inspires all of us to overcome our physical
disabilities and achieve our dreams and goals just
like Evelyn did.
We should never lose hope at the time of
struggle, instead we should keep on moving
forward.
Evelyn confesses that she is something
of a workaholic.
Evelyn says that “If you work hard and know
where you are going, you will get there”
HOW DO OTHERS PERCIEVE EVELYN
GLENNIE
Evelyn gives high priority to classes
for young musicians. Ann Richlin of
the Beethoven Fund for Deaf Children
says, “She is a shining inspiration for
deaf children. They see that there is
nowhere that they cannot go.”
She has given inspiration to those who
are handicapped, people who look to
her and say,’if she can do it, I can.’
And not the least, she has given
enormous pleasure to millions.
CONCLUSION
Evelyn says that “Music is about communication….it isn’t
just something that maybe physically sounds good or orally
sounds interesting; it’s something far, far deeper than that”
“Hearing is a form of touch. I could hear less through the ears
but more through the body”
