LESSON 9: Food Chains and Energy

GRADE 8-SCIENCE
LET’S REVIEW
•Name a common plant in a rainforest.
•Describe some common herbivores that
might live in a rainforest.
•Why are some animals called
carnivores? Give an example.
LET’S REVIEW
•Name a common plant in a rainforest.
Possible answers:

A common plant would be the

coconut palms or mango trees.
LET’S REVIEW
•Describe some common herbivores that
might live in a rainforest.
Possible answers:

Common herbivores are deer and

monkeys
LET’S REVIEW
•Why are some animals called carnivores? Give
an example.
Animals are called carnivores if they usually eat
another animal for food to obtain nutrients.
Examples would be lions, wolves and some
snakes.
LESSON PURPOSE
• The lesson is about the food chains in an
ecosystem. It will also let you understand
about the transfer of energy.
What is a food chain?
• A food chain is a sequence which shows how each individual
feeds on the organism below it in the chain. Each arrow
means “eaten by”.
What is a food chain?
• A leaf is eaten by a caterpillar, which is then eaten by a bird,
which is then eaten by a fox. Energy is transferred from one
organism to another in the direction of the arrow.
LET’S PRACTICE
Read/view the diagram carefully to think about
what it means.

What do the arrows represent?

What does the diagram above ‘say’ in words?
LET’S PRACTICE
Read/view the diagram carefully to think about
what it means.

What do the arrows represent?

The arrows represent the energy that is being passed from one organism
to another.
What does the diagram above ‘say’ in words?
Plants are eaten by herbivores and herbivores are eaten by carnivores.
• Herbivores
: eat plants, algae, or autotrophic bacteria, are the
primary consumers of an ecosystem.
• Carnivores, which eat the consumers from the levels
below
⮚ Secondary consumers include many small
mammals, such as rodents, and small fishes that
eat zooplankton
⮚ Tertiary consumers, such as snakes, eat mice and
other secondary consumers
⮚ Quaternary consumers include hawks and killer
whales.
• Omnivores: eat both plants and meat
• What is the name given to the group of animals that eat
plants?
• Complete the sentence: Omnivores eat ………… and ………
• Are all humans omnivores? Explain.
• What is the name given to the group of animals that eat
plants?
They are called herbivores.
• Complete the sentence: Omnivores eat ………… and ………

Omnivores eat plants and other animals.

• Are all humans omnivores? Explain.
Yes, most humans eat both plants and other animals and their body structures have
developed to be able to eat both plants and other animals. Some humans choose to
eat only plants and some humans choose not to eat the products of animals such as
milk or eggs – however, scientifically, humans are classified as Omnivores.
Fill in the boxes on the food chain diagram and answer the questions.

1. Write in the box an example of an herbivore in the mangrove swamps in the Philippines.
2. Write in the name of a carnivores found in a mangrove swamps of the Philippines.
3. Explain the important role in a food chain that producers have and give examples.
Fill in the boxes on the food chain diagram and answer the questions.

mollusks; or turtles, fish,

shrimps sharks

1. Write in the box an example of an herbivore in the mangrove swamps in the Philippines.

An example might include mollusks; or shrimps.

2. Write in the name of a carnivores found in a mangrove swamps of the Philippines.

Carnivores would include turtles, fish, sharks.

shrimps sharks

3. Explain the important role in a food chain that producers have and give examples.
Producers are very important as they make the food for animals to
eat from Water and Carbon dioxide. Examples include grasses,
plants, trees, ferns and mangroves.
LESSON CONCLUSION
Discuss or write your answers to the following questions on a
sheet of paper.

Q1. Did you find using the terms herbivore, carnivore and omnivore
difficult? If so, Why?
Q2. Did you find the answers to the questions in component 4B and 4C
interesting? If so, Why?
