    OBJECTIVE
    To provide a guideline on the general nursing procedure in the
    Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU)

    SCOPE
    Covers all the policies and procedures of admission up to discharge of
    critically ill neonates.
    NICU Process:
    Admission

    Receive notification from

    RECEIVE NOTIFICATION FROM OTHER UNIT
    Receive notification of admission from other unit/s. NOD from other units
    should orient the relatives regarding the NICU policies and secure conssent
    utilizing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Memorandum of Agreement.

    Prepare equipments needed.

    RECEIVE ADMISSION

    Receive the endorsement from releasing NOD. Perform initial assessment.

    Log patient in the NICU admission/Trans-in Logbook.


    RENDER PATIENT CARE

    Utilized equiments if needed/as ordered:


    • Pulse oxymeter
    • Infusion Pump/s or Syringe Pump/s
    • Incubator
    • Suction machine
    • Droplight, Phototherapy
    • Warmer
    • CPAP Apparatus
    • Intubation Set
    • Mechanical Ventilator
    RENDER PATIENT CARE
    Monitor patient status, document and refer significant changes on patient's
    condition.

    Render nursing care and procedure, implements Doctor's order


    • wound/cord care
    • suctioning
    • feeding
    • medication
    • phototherapy
    • labs and diagnostic procedures
    • treatments

    Assist doctor's in procedures done at bedside.

    ALWAYS HAVE A CONSENT FORM SIGNED AND MAKE SURE THAT
    RELATIVE/S ARE INFORMED AND UNDERSTAND THE PROCEDURE.

    DISINFECT INSTRUMENT OR EQUIPMENT USED
    BY PATIENT

    Disinfect all used equiments (infusion pumps, crib, incubator, etc)

    Schedule general Terminal Cleaning every 5th and 20th day of the month
    Utilization of
    Incubator
    S T E P - B Y- S T E P P R O C E S S
    1. Verify doctor's order on use of incubator
    2. Gather necessary equipment: incubator, distilled water, foam, foam casing
    (use pillowcase if unavailable)
    3. Pour distilled water into the humidifying reservoir according to level required
    by machine. Maintain adequate amount of fluid
    4. Connect incubator to an appropriate power source
    5. Close all lids and flaps of the unit.
    6. Power up the machine by pressing the power button
    7. Regulate the internal temperature accordingly
    a) Turn the temperature control knob or button between 35-37 degrees
    Celsius. Verify Physicians' order.
    b) Monitor internal temperature by constantly checking on the temperature
    reading.
    8. Remove patient's clothing
    9. Keep patient thermoregulated.
    10. Document use of machine in the Logbook and Patient'schart
