Bholi

By: K.A Abbas

BHOLI THE SIMPLETON
o Sulekha, the fourth daughter of Numberdar
Ramlal, was known as Bholi.
o When she was ten months old she had fallen
off the cot and hit head, perhaps damaging
some part of it. Due to this she had always
been a backward child among other children of
the village, thus aquiring the name ‘Bholi’.
o At birth she was fair and pretty but when she
was two years old, she had an attack of small-
pox, disfiguring her entire body except the eyes.
o She was neglected by her family and everyone
in the village through entire childhood.
THE TEACHER
o While Bholi was scared on her first day at school, sitting in
the far corner in her class, looking at the beautiful paintings
with bright colours, the teacher approached her.
o The teacher asked Bholi her name. Bholi was struggling but
the teacher encouraged her and gave her the confidence to
speak.
o When the teacher praised her she was more confident and
happy than before. This was her first time being praised.
o The teacher gave her a book and told her to read it.
o The book was full of colourfull pictures of animals.
o She promised Bholi to give her a bigger book after she
finished the first one. And then a still bigger one.
o “In time you will be more learned than anyone else in the
village. Then no one will ever be able to laugh at you.” She
said to Bholi.
THE STORY TAUGHT US…
o While the story is simple and short, it carries many evil of the society
and it carries many emotions of the protagonist -Bholi- as well.
o In this story boys are shown to have privileges over girls. Bholi’s
three brothers were sent to study in cities while she and her sisters
were already decided to be married.
o The story also brings out the way how people are shunned out and
looked down upon based on their appearance. Just because Bholi
was ugly and stammered, she was neglected and bullied.
o Another way the story depicts the evil of the society, dowry. The
system of dowry has been in India from far back in the past.
Bishamber Nath refused to marry Bholi, the ugly girl with pok-marks,
until her father gave him five thousand rupees.
o Bholi stood up for herself and her family when they were being
insulted infront of so many people. She finally spoke up for herself
and all the people there were shocked.
o She had gained confidence. She was not the dumb cow anymore.
o This taught us the evils as well as the will to be able to fight that evil.
