Cooperative Learning
Cooperative learning allows many
opportunities to develop learners’
interpersonal skills. It would give them
experiences on how they can properly
interact with the others and at the same time
listen and learn from their group mates.
Cooperative Learning
Cooperative learning is also a type of
constructivist teaching because it allows the
creation and innovation of knowledge
through group interaction and active
participation of each member.
Cooperative Learning
In the classroom, a cooperative learning
lesson involves students working in small
groups to accomplish a learning task. The
task is assigned by the teacher with clear
directions. Students then work on the task
together with defined roles.
Cooperative Learning
When the cooperative learning group
completes the learning task, the teacher
evaluates the results. That evaluation needs
to include some type of format to determine
of the students accomplish their learning
goals (i.e. rubrics).
Cooperative Learning
If each student sitting in the group isn’t held
responsible for helping complete their
portion of their learning task, then it isn’t
truly “cooperative learning”.

by. Students can discuss a question or topic and share with
the whole class.

atmosphere.
3 STAGES OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING

1. Teachers assign learners to groups.

2. Tasking is a vital component of cooperative

learning.

3. The working time and task collaboration should be an

active process.
Experiential Learning
Learning by doing. That is the basis for experiential learning. Experiential
learning focuses on the idea that the best ways to learn things is by actually
having experiences. Those experiences then stick out in your mind and
help you retain information and remember facts. For teachers, creating
opportunities for your students to have experiences based on the things
they are learning is the key.
Experiential Learning
Experiential learning includes actual hands-on activities that are still
considered the most effective means of learning. Experiences that are
direct and purposeful are still the learners’ best opportunity to master a
concept or a skill. Direct and purposeful experiences are rich experiences
that the senses bring, from which ideas, concepts, generalizations are
constructed (Dale, 1969).
Experiential Learning
Realities can be brought to the classroom through the planned activities of
the
teacher. In planning the delivery of a lesson or topic, the way experiences
are processed and used in the classroom makes it easier for the learner to
internalize what has been taught. They can see and feel that what is being
learned is a part if their real-life situations. Experiences through the planned
activities of the teacher is a way of achieving a goal or objective in learning.
Learning by doing, then, is an essential element in discovering and
constructing new knowledge and concepts.
PROPONENTS OF
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

experiential learning.
❏He is also known for his learning style

educators today.

DAVID KOLB
Kolb’s Learning Theory
Experiential learning theory works in four stages - concrete learning,
reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active
experimentation. The first two stages of the cycle involve grasping an
experience, the second two focus on transforming an experience. Kolb
argues that effective learning is seen as the learner goes through the
cycle, and that they can enter into the cycle at any time.
Kolb’s Learning Theory
❖Concrete learning is when a learner gets a new experience, or
interprets a past experience in a new way.
❖Reflective observation comes next, where the learner reflects on their
experience personally. They use the lens of their experience and
understanding to reflect on what this experience means.
Kolb’s Learning Theory
❖Abstract conceptualization happens as the learner forms new ideas or
adjusts their thinking based on the experience and their reflection about
it.
❖Active experimentation is where the learner applies the new ideas to
the world around them, to see if there are any modifications to be
made. This process can happen over a short period of time, or even
over a long span of time.
BENEFITS OF
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
❏Opportunity to immediately apply knowledge.
❏Promotion of teamwork.
❏Improved motivation
❏Opportunity for reflection.
❏Real world practice.

EXPERIENCE
An inclusive teacher is one who takes into
consideration all the unique characteristics of its
learners. To do this, he or she has to look into their
individual learning needs, strengths, cognitive
abilities, skills, potentials, and limitations. This is
surely a very challenging task for all teachers.
One way of addressing this is through the
application of one’s knowledge in the
different learning theories in the teaching and
learning process.
Summary
Collaborative and experiential learning are
lodged under constructivism. Hence,
experience plays an important role in
creating knowledge. When applied to
teaching, collaborative and experiential learning
activities have advantages especially in the 21st
Century classroom and in implementing the K to
12 curriculum. When learners are richly filled
with learning experiences, transfer of learning
will run easily and smoothly.
GROUP ACTIVITY
Acrostic Poem
The students will be divided into two groups.
Each group will prepare an acrostic poem about
what they learn from the discussion. The first
group will create an acrostic poem about the
word “Cooperative” while the other group will
create an acrostic poem about the word
“Experiential”.

ASSIGNMENT
DIRECTIONS: Read each situation carefully. Identify if the situations how cooperative or experiential
learning. Write Co-Learning if it shows Cooperative Learning and Exp-Learning if it shows Experiential
Learning.

1. A teacher implements a peer tutoring in her class. The student who did well in the last unit was paired
with someone who needs help. They meet up everyday after class to study and as time goes by, the students
who first needs help is learning and improving in many ways with the help of the other student.
2. The students were assigned to create a painting. The teacher told them to go on the campus grounds to
find their subject inspiration.
3. The teacher grouped the class into two. Each group was assigned a topic that they need to report. The
students set to meet on the weekends to do their report. When the day came that they have to present, they did
very well that the teacher complimented their presentation.
4. The Science Majors recently held a class in a laboratory wherein they made an experiment.
5. The school provided an educational field trip for students to Museums in Manila. It is to comply with the
requirements for the Art student’s semestral project.
