VIOLENCE

• Violence is the use of physical force so as to injure, abuse,


damage, or destroy

• According to WHO, “The intentional use of physical force or power,


threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a
group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood
of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or
deprivation, is termed as Violence.
GENERAL DEFINITION

DEFINTION
• Domestic violence (also called domestic abuse or family
violence) is violence or other abuse that occurs in a domestic
setting, such as in a marriage or cohabitation.
DEFINITION BY LAW

• According to the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan,1973


and the PPC(Pakistan Penal Code,1860):

“Domestic Violence includes, but is not limited to, all acts of


gender based and other physical or psychological abuse
committed by any respondent against women, children or
other vulnerable persons, with whom the respondent is or
has been in a domestic relationship.”
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INCLUDE

• Repeated exhibition of obsessive possessiveness or jealousy constituting


serious invasion of the victim’s privacy
• Insults or ridicule
• Threats to cause physical pain
• Threats of malicious prosecution
• Blaming a spouse of immorality
• Threats of divorce
• Baseless blaming or imputing insanity
• Bringing false allegation upon the character of a female member

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE

• The form of violence which exhibits contact involvement, intended


to cause fear, pain, injury, other physical suffering or bodily harm
PHYSICAL VIOLENCE

• Physical violence is exhibited in many different forms:


• Acid attacks
• Female homicides
• Strangulation
• Honor killing
• Dowry violence
SEXUAL VIOLENCE

• According to WHO (World Health Organization):


• Any sexual act aimed at harassing, unwanted sexual comments or
advances or trafficking acts directed against a person’s sexuality
using coercion are considered as Sexual Violence.

• Obligatory inspections for virginity


• Female genital mutilation
EMOTIONAL VIOLENCE

A pattern of behaviour that threatens, intimidates, dehumanizes or systematically


undermines self-worth of someone.
EMOTIONAL VIOLENCE

• Also called as Psychological


Violence/Abuse.

• Emotional abuse includes:


• Threats • Unrelenting criticism
• Isolation • Constant personal devaluation
• Public humiliation • Stone walling
• Gaslighting
ECONOMIC VIOLENCE

• The form of abuse when one intimate partner has control over the
other partner’s access to economic resources.
ECONOMIC VIOLENCE

• Also called as Financial Abuse

• This involves:
• Preventing a spouse from resource acquisition
• Limiting the resources of a victim
• Exploiting the economic resources of a victim
• Reducing the victim’s access to opportunities
• Forcing the victim to sign documents against her will
CAUSES

• Major cause of domestic violence include:


• Unemployment
• Substance Abuse
• Mental Health Problems
• Poor Anger Management
• Excessive Dependence on the Abuser
• Perpetrators Pursuit of Self-Gratification
• Maintaining relationships on the basis of Power and Control over
victim
CAUSES

• A research study shows that perpetrators of domestic violence:


• Are Narcissistic
• Wilfully lack Empathy
• Treat their needs more important than others

• Such type of perpetrators psychologically manipulate their victim


to believe their violence is caused by the Victim’s Inadequacy,
rather than their own selfish desires and power.

• Physical Violence may


result in:

• Broken Bones
• Lacerations
• Internal Breeding
• Serious Organ Damage
PHYSICAL EFFECTS

• PREGNANT WOMEN are at a greater risk of:


• Miscarriage
• Pre-Term Labour
• Injury or Death to Foetus
SEXUAL EFFECTS

• Women in an Abusive Relationship are more likely to acquire STDs


(Sexually Transmitted Diseases) such as HIV/AIDS.

• Such women are also at a greater risk of being involved in Forced


Sex and Marital Rape.
FINANCIAL EFFECTS

• In some cases, due to being


financially exploited, victims of
Domestic Violence lack:
• Education
• Specialized Skills
• Proper Training

• This becomes a big hurdle in the


way of the victim becoming
Financially Independent, causing
financial problems for the victim.
PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS

• Victims of Domestic Violence experience:


• High Amounts of Stress
• Anxiety and Fear
• Feeling of Worthlessness
• DEPRESSION
• Flashbacks, Intrusive Images and Nightmares
• Startled Responses
• Difficulty in Socializing and adjusting to Society
• PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT

• Regarding the prevention of the Domestic Violence, a Bill was


passed by the senate on the 20th of February, 2012 to make
provisions for protection against Domestic Violence.
• The Bill:
• Was introduced by Federal Human Rights Minister Dr. Shireen
Mazari
• Aims to establish an effective system of protection, relief and
rehabilitation for women suffering from DV.
• Fine has to be paid ranging from Rs. 20,000-100,000.
• If unable to pay Fine, Imprisonment of Three Months
PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT

• The PCSW (Punjab Commission on the Status of Women) has created


a Toll-Free Helpline (1043). The Helpline:
• Is available 24/7
• Is Managed and Supervised by All-Women call agents
• Addresses your inquiries and complaints on Domestic Violence
• Comprises of Three Legal Advisors, Supervisors and Management
Staff, all of which are women

PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT

• Raise Awareness about the Adverse Effects of DV by:


• Educating yourself
• Educating People around you
• Conducting Seminars
• Hosting a Training or a Workshop
CONCLUSION

• Violence can not be considered good in any form.


• Thus, Domestic Violence should be discouraged in any possible
way.
• As members of a good and organized society, we should play our
roles as Responsible Individuals and Citizens.
• Avoid promoting content and conveying messages regarding
Domestic Violence, either on women, men or children.
• Women should be made aware of the Adverse effects of this
menace, and should be encouraged to stand for their rights.
