HISTORY OF
BASKETBALL
• Basketball is a popular sport that was
invented in December 1891 by Dr. James
Naismith, a Canadian physical education
instructor. The game was created as a way to
keep his students at the International YMCA
Training School in Springfield,
Massachusetts, active during the winter
months. Naismith wanted to come up with a
game that could be played indoors and would
help develop skills such as agility, passing,
and shooting.
• Dr. James Naismith’s invention of basketball
involved using a soccer ball and two peach
baskets as goals. The original game had
thirteen rules, which included prohibitions
against running with the ball and tackling
opponents. The first official game of
basketball was played on December 21,
1891, with nine players on each team.
Basketball is a popular team sport played on a
rectangular court, usually indoors but also
BASKETBALL sometimes outdoors, between two teams of five
players each. The objective of the game is to
IN NATURE score points by shooting the ball through the
opponent’s hoop, which is mounted 10 feet
above the floor. The team with the most points
at the end of the game wins.

BASKETBALL RULES AND REGULATIONS

Teams and Players

A basketball game consists
of two teams, with each
team having five players on
the court at a time. Each
team can have a maximum
of 12 players on their roster.
BASKETBALL RULES AND REGULATIONS

Starting the Game

The game starts with a jump ball at the
center circle. The visiting team calls the
toss, and the winner of the toss gets to
choose which basket to defend and
which direction to play. The team that
loses the toss gets to choose which side
of the court to start on.
BASKETBALL RULES AND REGULATIONS

Scoring
A successful shot from within the
three-point line is worth two points,
while a successful shot from outside
the three-point line is worth three
points. A successful free throw is
worth one point. The team with the
most points at the end of the game
wins.
BASKETBALL RULES AND REGULATIONS
Violations
A violation occurs when a player fails to
follow the rules of the game. Some
common violations include:
• Traveling • Shot Clock

• Double Dribble • Five Seconds

• Carrying • Eight Seconds

• Three Seconds • Backcourt Violation

• Ten Seconds • Fouls

Violations

Traveling
Traveling is defined as taking more than “a step
and a half” without dribbling the ball. This means
that after gathering the ball, a player is allowed to
take two steps before they must release the ball by
either dribbling or passing. If a player takes more
steps without dribbling, it is considered traveling.
Violations

Double Dribble
Double dribbling is a violation in basketball that occurs
when a player touches the ball with both hands at the
same time while dribbling, or after ending their dribble,
picks the ball up, and then dribbles again. This
violation results in a turnover, giving possession of the
ball to the opposing team.
Violations

Carrying
Carrying is a violation in the game of basketball. It
occurs when the dribbling player is holding the
basketball without dribbling it. Carrying is like a
double dribble, because the player momentarily
stops dribbling, then resumes dribbling.
Violations

Three Seconds
Violation
In basketball, a three-second violation occurs
when an offensive player remains in the key or
paint area (the free-throw lane) for more than
three seconds continuously. This rule is
designed to prevent players from camping out
near the basket for extended periods, thus
ensuring fair play and movement on the court.
Violations
Ten Seconds
Violation
In basketball, a ten-second violation occurs when a
team fails to advance the ball past the half-court line
within ten seconds after gaining possession. This
violation results in a turnover, and the opposing team
gains possession of the ball. The shot clock in
basketball is typically set at 24 seconds for professional
games and 30 seconds for college games. The purpose
of the ten-second violation rule is to prevent teams
from stalling or delaying the game by holding onto the
ball for an extended period without attempting to
advance it.
Violations
Shot Clock
Violation
A shot clock violation is a rule enforcement
in basketball that occurs when a team fails
to attempt a shot towards the opposition’s
basket within a specified time limit. This
rule is designed to promote continuous
action and prevent teams from stalling or
wasting time. The shot clock duration
varies depending on the league and level of
play.
Violations

5 Seconds Violation
In basketball, a 5-second violation occurs
when a player holding the ball does not start
a dribble, pass, or attempt a shot within five
seconds of being closely guarded by an
opponent. This rule is in place to prevent
stalling and to keep the game moving at a
reasonable pace. The violation results in a
turnover, with the opposing team gaining
possession of the ball.
Violations

8 Seconds Violation
In basketball, an 8-second violation occurs
when a team in possession of the ball fails to
advance the ball past the midcourt line
within eight seconds of gaining possession.
This rule is designed to prevent teams from
stalling and to promote a faster pace of play.
Violations
Back Court
Violation
A backcourt violation in basketball occurs
when a player with possession of the ball in
their own team’s backcourt crosses the
midcourt line with the ball and then returns
to their backcourt without having released
the ball for a shot or an attempt to pass it to a
teammate in their frontcourt. This violation
results in a loss of possession for the
offensive team.
Violations

Fouls
Personal Foul
Personal foul is a breach of the rules that
concerns illegal personal contact with an
opponent. It is the most common type of
foul in basketball. A player fouls out on
reaching a limit on personal fouls for the
game and is disqualified from participation
in the remainder of the game.
Violations

Fouls
Technical Foul
Technical foul is any infraction of the rules
penalized as a foul which does not involve
physical contact during the course of play
between opposing players on the court, or
is a foul by a non-player. The most
common technical foul is for
unsportsmanlike conduct
Violations

Fouls
Flagrant Foul
Flagrant Foul Penalty 1: Unnecessary
contact committed by a player against an
opponent.
Flagrant Foul Penalty 2: Unnecessary and
excessive contact committed by a player
against an opponent.
Basketball skills
Basketball skills encompass a
wide range of abilities that players • Dribbling • Defense
need to excel in the sport. These • Passing • Ball Handling
skills include both physical and
mental aspects that are crucial for • Shooting • Teamwork
success on the basketball court. • Rebounding • Footwork
Some of the key basketball skills
include:
Basketball Basic Skills

Dribbling
Dribbling is the skill of bouncing the ball
with one hand continuously while moving
around the court. It is crucial for players to
have good dribbling skills to maintain
possession of the ball and maneuver
around defenders.
Basketball Basic Skills

Shooting
Shooting is one of the most important
skills in basketball. Players need to be
able to shoot accurately from various
distances on the court, including layups,
mid-range shots, and three-pointers.
Basketball Basic Skills
Passing
Passing involves transferring the ball to
teammates efficiently to create scoring
opportunities. Different types of passes,
such as chest passes, bounce passes, and
overhead passes, are used depending on
the situation.
Basketball Basic Skills

Rebounding
Rebounding is the act of gaining
possession of missed shots. Both
offensive and defensive rebounding are
essential skills in basketball, as they
give teams second-chance scoring
opportunities or prevent the opponent
from scoring.
Basketball Basic Skills

Defense
Defense is a fundamental aspect of
basketball that involves preventing the
opposing team from scoring. Players need
to have good footwork, positioning, and
timing to effectively guard their opponents
and disrupt their plays.
Basketball Basic Skills
Ball Handling
Ball handling encompasses dribbling,
passing, and catching the ball
effectively. Players with strong ball-
handling skills can protect the ball from
defenders, make quick decisions under
pressure, and execute plays smoothly.
Basketball Basic Skills

Teamwork

players to work together cohesively to
achieve success. Communication,
coordination, and understanding each
other’s strengths and weaknesses are
vital components of effective
teamwork in basketball.
Basketball Basic Skills

Footwork

for both offense and defense. Proper
footwork helps players move quickly and

drive past defenders, pivot effectively,
and maintain balance while shooting or
defending.
