RAF AIRCRAFT
Spitfire LF Mk IX
SERVICE TIME: 1938–1948
The Supermarine Spitfire is a British
NUMBER BUILT: 20,351 single-seat fighter aircraft used by the RAF
and other Allied countries before, during,
ROLE: Fighter Aircraft/interceptor and after WW2. Many variants of the
Spitfire were built, from the Mk 1 to the
Rolls-Royce Griffon-engined Mk 24 using
several wing configurations and guns. It
was the only British fighter produced
continuously throughout the war. The
Spitfire remains popular among
enthusiasts; around 70 remain airworthy,
and many more are static exhibits in
aviation museums throughout the world.
Lancaster B.I PA474
The Lancaster has its origins in the twin-engine Avro
Manchester which had been developed during the late
SERVICE TIME: 1942-1964
1930s for "world-wide use" which could carry a
torpedo internally, and make shallow dive-bombing
NUMBER BUILT: 7,377
attacks. Originally developed as an evolution of the
ROLE: Heavy Bomber Manchester (which had proved troublesome in service
and was retired in 1942), the Lancaster was powered
by four Rolls-Royce Merlins in one of the versions. It
first saw service with RAF Bomber command in 1942
and as the Stratic bombing command over Europe
gathered momentum, it was the main aircraft for the
night-time bombing campaigns that followed. As
increasing numbers of the type were produced, it
became the principal Heavy Bomber used by the RAF.
It overshadowis the Halifax and Stirling, two other
commonly used bombers.
Gloster Meteor
The Gloster Meteor was the first
SERVICE TIME:1943–1955 British jet fighter and the Allies' only Jet
aircraft to engage in combat operations
NUMBER BUILT: 3,947 during the Second world WarThe Meteor's
development was heavily reliant on its
ROLE: Fighter Aircraft ground-breaking Turbojet engines.
Development of the aircraft began in 1940,
although work on the engines had been
under way since 1936. The Meteor first
flew in 1943 and commenced operations
on 27 July 1944 with
No. 616 Squadron RAF.
English Electric Lightning
SERVICE TIME: 1960-1988
The English Electric Lightning is a
NUMBER BUILT: 377 British fighter aircraft that served as
an interceptor during the 1960s, the 1970s
ROLE: Fighter Aircraft/interceptor and into the late 1980s. It was capable of
a top speed of above Mach 2. The
Lightning was designed, developed, and
manufactured by English Electric. After EE
merged with other aircraft manufacturers
to form the British Aircraft Coperation it
was marketed as the BAC Lightning. It
was operated by the Royal Air Force.

SERVICE TIME: 1994 - PRESENT The Eurofighter Typhoon is a European
multinational Twin
NUMBER BUILT: 592 engine, supersonic, canard delta
wing, Multirole fighter. The Typhoon was
ROLE: Multirole Fighter, Air superiority fighter designed originally as an Air superiority
fighter and is manufactured by a
consortium of Airbus, BAE Systems and
Leonardo that conducts the majority of the
project through a joint Holding company,
Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH. The The
NATO Eurofighter 2000 and Tornado
Management Agency, representing the
UK, Germany, Italy and Spain, manages
the project and is the prime customer.
A330 MRTT / KC-30A
Voyager The Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker
SERVICE TIME: 2007– PRESENT Transport (MRTT) is a European Aerial
refueling and Military transport aircraft
NUMBER BUILT: 59 based on the civilian Airbus A330. A total
of 16 countries have placed firm orders for
ROLE: Multirole Tanker/ Transport approximately 68 aircraft, of which 51 had
been delivered by 30 November 2020. A
version of the A330 MRTT, the
EADS/Northrop Grumman KC-45, was
selected by the USAF for its aerial tanker
replacement programme but the
programme was cancelled.

Women in the RAF.
• 1 February 1949 is when women were allowed to join the RAF For a full career.

• 80% Of women's jobs in the RAF From 1949 where, driving, ground signalling, clerical work and catering.

• The first RAF Woman pilot Julie Gibson Only took flight as a fully operational pilot in 1991.

• Wing Commander Nikki Thomas became the first woman to command an RAF fast jet squadron.

• Flight Lieutenant Kirsty Moore appointed first female pilot to serve with the Red Arrows, in 2016.

• Sue Gray, RAF engineer promoted to Air Marshal, the most senior female military officer in the British armed
forces, in 2019.
Founding times.
• Hugh Trenchard, 1st Viscount Trenchard is the person known by Google to be “The Father of the RAF”.

• The RAF was founded on 1st April 1918 under the control of the British Government Air Ministry.

• RAF Northolt esablishished in May 1915 is the most oldest RAF Base to exist, it Opened as Royal Flying
Corps' Military School.

• Some of the First aircrafts where the Short 184, Short 320, Avro 504 K & N

• 3 September: The RAF launches its first raid of the war over Germany territory. Eighteen Handley Page
Hampdens and nine Vickers Wellingtons are sent to attack the German warships moored at the Wilhelmshaven
naval base.
History of the Roundel
• They were first used during the First World War.

• The first aircraft to use the first Roundel Being Red an Wight was the RNAS Bristol Scout C.

• 5th February 1941 is when the ATC Was established

• The ATC was established by King George VI as the Air Commodore-in-Chief.

• The ATC Motto was established in 1941 as Venture Adventure.

• Girls where allowed to join the ATC In 1980.

• over 1000 squadrons across the UK and overseas, (Counted quite recently)
