Internet of Things
Defination:
The Internet of Things (IOT) is a system of interrelated
computing devices, mechanical and digital machines,
objects, animals or people that are provided with unique
identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network
without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer
interaction
#The Internet of Things is the concept of everyday objects
from industries to wearable devices - using built in sensors
to other data and take actions on that data across network
Internet of Things
History:
•1980s - 1990s: Early ideas of connecting devices emerge, but the term "Internet of
Things" comes later.
•1999: MIT's Auto-ID Center pioneers RFID technology for object tracking.
•2000s: Sensors and wireless tech advance, making IoT growth possible.
•2008: "Internet of Things" term gains popularity.
•2010s: Consumer IoT grows with smart devices, and Industrial IoT (IIOT) emerges.
•2016: IIOT focuses on industrial applications like predictive maintenance.
•2020s: Edge computing and 5G improve IoT capabilities.
•Present and Future: Ongoing evolution with AI, ML, and continued challenges in
security and privacy.
Internet of Things
Explanation
:Increasingly, organizations in a variety of industries are using IoT to operate more
efficiently, deliver enhanced customer service, improve decision-making and increase
the value of the business.
With IoT, data is transferable over a network without requiring human-to-human or
human-to-computer interactions.
A thing in the internet of things can be a person with a heart monitor implant, a farm
animal with a biochip transponder, an automobile that has built-in sensors to alert the
driver when tire pressure is low, or any other natural or man-made object that can be
assigned an internet protocol address and is able to transfer data over a network.
COMPONENT OF
Sensors/Devices: include motion sensors, temperature sensors, and
smart appliances IOT
(e.g., smart bulbs, thermostats)
EXAMPLE:
 Motion sensors in each room.
 Temperature sensors connected to the thermostat.
 Smart bulbs and smart locks.
Gateway: Acts as a bridge between devices and the cloud, ensuring data
transmission and security.
EXAMPLE:
 A central hub that collects data from sensors and securely transmits it to
the cloud.
COMPONENT OF
IOT
Cloud/Service: Stores and processes the data collected by devices,
enabling remote access and analysis.
EXAMPLE:
A platform where data is stored, analyzed, and made accessible for users.
Mobile App: Provides a user interface to control and monitor IOT
devices remotely.
EXAMPLE:
Interface for users to remotely control devices, monitor home conditions,
and receive alerts.

Pros and cons of IOT
Advantages:
•Enables access to information from anywhere at any time on any device.
•Improves communication between connected electronic devices.
•Enables the transfer of data packets over a connected network, which can save time and
money.
•Collects large amounts of data from multiple devices, aiding both users and
manufacturers.
•Analyzes data at the edge, reducing the amount of data that needs to be sent to the
cloud.
•Automates tasks to improve the quality of a business's services and reduces the need for
human intervention.
•Enables healthcare patients to be cared for continually and more effectively.
Pros and cons of IOT
Disadvantages:
•Increases the attack surface as the number of connected devices grows. As more
information is shared between devices, the potential for a hacker to steal confidential
information increases.
•Makes device management challenging as the number of IoT devices increases.
Organizations might eventually have to deal with a massive number of IoT devices, and
collecting and managing the data from all those devices could be challenging.
•Has the potential to corrupt other connected devices if there's a bug in the system.
•Increases compatibility issues between devices, as there's no international standard of
compatibility for IoT. This makes it difficult for devices from different manufacturers to
communicate with each other.
