 Coined by Johann Christian Reil in 1808

 The study and treatment of mental illness,


emotional disturbance, and abnormal behavior

health in 1946 as

“a state of complete physical, mental, and


social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity”

• Hallucination: False sensory perception occurring in the


absence of any relevant external stimulation

• Illusion: Perceptual misinterpretation of a real external stimulus

• Insight: Conscious recognition of one's own condition

• Mood: Pervasive and sustained feeling tone experienced
