CHAPTER 3

-starts with an introductory paragraph of what are discussed in

the chapter

RESEARCH DESIGN
-may be categorized into qualitative and quantitative research
-analyse your study carefully and determine what research
design is most appropriate to use in your investigation
-specific designs (refer to our learning material)
Different types of Research Design

1. Action Research Design

2. Case Study Design
3. Causal Design
4. Cross-Sectional Design
5. Descriptive Design
6. Experimental Design
7. Exploratory Design
8. Historical Design
9. Mixed-Method Design
Content of a Research Design

1. The method that the research will use

2. The research design chosen
3. Justification on how the research design would help
attain the answers to the research problems
4. Explanation of the research design, its definition and
systematic function
5. Processes and procedures that will be undertaken to
complement the research design
POPULATION, SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

POPULATION-refers to the entire group, things or events that share at least

one common trait which are of high relevance to the research study.

SAMPLE -It is a smaller number of observations taken from the total

population

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE- It is how a sample is selected

-It can be through RANDOM SAMPLING (simple random sampling,
proportional random sampling , systematic random sampling)and STRATIFIED
SAMPLING
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
-depending on the research design adopted by the study
-the researcher needs to develop a research instrument and
establish its validity
-it may be questionnaire, interview schedule, observation logs,
etc.

a. Mechanical Devices
b. Clerical Devices
Characteristics of Good Data Collection Instrument

1. Brief and Effective

2. Efficient
3. Systematically Sequential
4. Valid and Reliable
5. Researcher and Sample-friendly
RESEARCH PROCEDURE
-explain in detail how the researcher will conduct the study
-this may include the seeking of permission from concerned
authorities to gather the data in their respective institutions/
organizations
STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

-it outlines the various test that will be done to analyze and
interpret the data gathered

DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS –tests used in describing the

characteristics of a given set/s of scores (measure of central
tendency, variability, etc.)

INFERENTIAL STATISTICS- tests used to measure the level 2

questions and will prove the hypotheses
Week 6 (refer to the LM)
Learning Task 1
 Fill in the table with your research
study as the basis.
 Answer the guide questions.
Learning Task 2
Week 7 (Individual Task)
1. Identify the following from your research study
a. Population
b. Sample
c. Sampling technique
2. Research Instrument /Tools used
3. Research Procedure / Systematic Scheme
4. Statistical Treatment used
5. Explain why your chosen statistical treatment
used is suitable or fitted to your research study
