Alton Glenn Millers Dossier Born On March 1, 1904. Alton Glenn Miller, which was his birth name, was born in Clarinda, Iowa and in 1907 he and his family moved to the plains of Tyron, Nebraska and lived in a SOD.

Glenn Miller Glenns love and passion of music was mostly inherited by his mother, who played the pump organ every evening. At age 13, Miller began milking cows, to earn money to buy a trombone.

Glenn Miller In the 1920s Miller went to Colorado University, music was not his ideal career, while at Colorado University Miller played with the Boyd Senters Band, playing the trombone.

Glenn Miller Miller was only in college for 3 terms. In 1927 Miller moved to Los Angeles and played in Ben Pollacks orchestra. Glenn Also played and arranged music with the Dorsey Brothers.

Glenn Miller Miller also played with Ray Noble, and helped organize his band. In 1937 however, Glenn decided to start his own band. And then the Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed.

Glenn Millers style was mostly swing-dance-jazz, and Big Band jazz, and some just straight jazz.

In 1942 at the peak of his career, Miller decided to join the effort for the war. At 38, Miller was too old to be drafted, and at first he volunteered for the Navy but was told that that they did not need his services.

He persuaded the United States Army to accept him so he could, in his own words, "be placed in charge of a modernized Army band. Captain Glenn Miller was then transferred to the Army Air Corps to start a war time band.

Captain Glenn Miller served two years in the United States Army Air Corps as a wartime band leader. General Jimmy Doolittle said, next to a letter from home, that organization was the greatest morale builder in the European Theater of Operations. Only Trigger Alpert and Paul Tanner are known survivors of the civilian band.

The musical piece that made Miller most famous was his piece, Moonlight Serenade. This song was released on the album Sunrise Serenade, April 4, 1939 on RCA Bluebird.

This song was in the Top 10 hit on the U.S. pop charts in 1939, and #3 on the Billboard Charts for 15 weeks that same year! Miller had five records in the top 20 songs of 1939 on Billboards Charts!
