STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- In her Kindergarten yearbook, it says Dr. Courtney Massa, 31, wanted to be a veterinarian. Similarly, Dr. James Di Giuseppi, 30, can’t remember a time when he wanted to do anything other than dedicate his life to caring for pets.

“Ever since I was little, I always loved animals, and I’ve always had a big heart for them,” said Massa. “I was one of those people who wanted to be a vet as a kid, and I actually went through with it.”

Said Di Giuseppi: “Growing up, my family always had pets. My father was always buying guinea pigs, hamsters, hermit crabs and snakes since I was young, so I’ve been around animals forever, and all different types of animals.”

After extensive education and training in veterinary medicine, both Staten Islanders earned their degrees from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts. Soon after the peers worked together on Staten Island, and earlier this year branched out to open Mid Island Veterinary Practice in New Dorp.

“Throughout our careers, we’ve had the privilege of working in various veterinary settings, both private and corporate, gaining invaluable experience and honing our skills in diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions in companion animals,” said Massa. “Making a positive impact on the lives of animals and their owners has been the most rewarding aspect of our journey as veterinarians.”

Now, with the opening of their own veterinary practice they are “thrilled” to have the opportunity to bring together their collective expertise and passion for animal care.

“Our goal is not only to provide top-notch medical services, but also to create a warm, welcoming environment where pets and their owners feel like valued members of our extended family,” said Di Giuseppi.

The perfect location

Choosing New Dorp Lane for their practice was a strategic decision, they said.

“Situated across the street from Miller Field, a bustling destination for dog owners and their beloved pets, we saw an opportunity to provide convenient and reliable veterinary care to this vibrant community,” said Massa. “This community is not only rich in diversity, but also deeply connected through a shared love for animals.”

And the high profile location has proved to be favorable for business.

“The neighborhood over here is great. We have a lot of clients who walk by with their pets and they just stop in to check out the practice and see what’s going on,” said Di Giuseppi.

Focus on preventive medicine

At Mid Island Veterinary Practice, Di Giuseppi and Massa say they are dedicated to delivering “personalized care with a focus on preventive medicine, early detection and proactive wellness.”

“Whether it’s a routine check-up, a complex surgical procedure, or ongoing management of a chronic condition, we’re here to partner with pet owners every step of the way, ensuring their beloved companions lead happy, healthy lives,” said Di Giuseppi.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to serve the Staten Island community and look forward to building lasting relationships with both two-legged and four-legged members alike,” he added.
