Mystik Dan's quest to join the ranks of Triple Crown winners ended during the 149th Preakness Stakes. The suspense was over quickly.

Many of our best horse racing betting sites will post Triple Crown odds closer to start of the big three races.

Mystik Dan won a thrilling Kentucky Derby in 2024 after narrowly prevailing during a three-way photo finish. He wasn't among the top favorites in our Kentucky Derby odds, but he still triumphed with odds as long as +2500.

However, his push to become the next Triple Crown winner ended when the thoroughbred finished second in the Preakness Stakes. Mystik Dan came on strong while challenging leader and dark horse Seize the Grey, who entered with a +1500 price in our Preakness Stakes odds. But he couldn't finish the job, with Seize The Grey pulling away down the stretch.

The number of Triple Crown winners will remain at 13, with Justify the last to accomplish the feat in 2018.

Previous Triple Crown winners

There was a long gap between Triple Crown winners before Bob Baffert's horses started dominating for a period around 2015, with American Pharoah and Justify each making history. Prior to those runs, Affirmed was the last horse to take all three races back in 1978.

How to read Triple Crown odds

A crucial step to betting on the Triple Crown is understanding how the odds work. Put simply, American odds represent how much money you would win on a $100 wager - or, in some cases, how much money you would need to wager to return $100.

Let's refer to an example. After winning the Kentucky Derby, Mystik Dan was given +1600 odds to complete the 2024 Triple Crown. That means a $100 bet at those odds would return $1600 in profit, or a $10 bet would return $160. You could even bet $1 for a $16 return if Mystik won all three races.

According to our odds converter, he was only getting a 5.88% implied probability of completing the Triple Crown.

You'll want to be careful staking too much on long-shot bets, as the low implied win probabilities indicate just how unlikely it is for them to win.

Triple Crown FAQ

What is the Triple Crown?

There are three races involved in horse racing's Triple Crown, beginning with the Kentucky Derby. If a horse wins the Derby and then also goes on to take the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, it becomes a Triple Crown winner.

The title of Triple Crown winner has been up for grabs since the first running of the Kentucky Derby in 1875. Still, just 13 horses have earned the honor, and there have been periods with several Triple Crown winners and then large gaps.

For example, four of the 13 winners came in the 1940s, with the last during that decade in 1948. But then another one didn't come until the famed Secretariat in 1973.

When are the Triple Crown races?

We don't have all the dates yet for the 2025 Triple Crown, with the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes still without a set date.

  • Kentucky Derby: May 3, 2025
  • Preakness Stakes: Was held May 28 in 2024, no date for 2025 yet
  • Belmont Stakes: Was held June 8 in 2024, no date for 2025 yet

Who last won the Triple Crown?

Justify, trained by Bob Baffert, was the last Triple Crown winner, capturing all three races in 2018.

How many horses have won the Triple Crown?

There have been 13 Triple Crown winners, most recently Justify in 2018. Only five horses have completed the feat since 1948.
