My buddies and I were talking about this and wondering if a WC winner or a Euro (all regions) winner should get automatic qualification to the next WC (or following Euro, etc). An interesting point was raised. If France didnt have to qualify for the WC because of winning the last WC, or Italy (oof) because of winning the Euro, would their lack of games going into the tournament hurt them. What about development to the senior sides from the kids (youth teams).
