Man accused of hitting woman with car was escaping gunshots, attorney says

Syracuse, N.Y. - A Syracuse man charged with fleeing after hitting a woman with his car was trying to escape gunfire, his attorney said Thursday.

John Cummings, 46, is accused of hitting a 22-year-old woman with his 2012 Audi Q7 after quickly driving away from the 200 block of Wolf Street around 2 a.m. on Oct. 1, 2023, according to court documents.

He was later charged with second-degree assault and leaving the scene of a serious physical injury, according to court documents.
