Syracuse, N.Y. — A Syracuse police officer shot and killed a dog after it bit him Friday.
Around 11:49 a.m. officers were responding to a larceny call at the Rite Aid on Butternut Street, according to 911 dispatches.
Soonafter, an officer announced that shots were fired. An officer said he shot a dog that attacked him.
More officers were requested to help. An ambulance was requested for the officer at 11:53 a.m.
The officer was taken to a hospital for a dog bite, said Kieran Coffey, a police spokesperson. Coffey confirmed that the officer shot and killed the dog while responding to a larceny call.
The pitbull belonged to the suspect, Coffey said.
The officers reported that the dog was dead on the road. Multiple Syracuse police cars are on scene as well as a crime scene van.
