Tornado confirmed in Oswego County; 7 so far in Western and Central NY

Redfield, N.Y. — A tornado touched down Wednesday afternoon in northeastern Oswego County as the remnants of Hurricane Beryl rocked Upstate New York, officials said.

The EF1-rated tornado, the second-least severe on the Enhanced Fujita scale, hit the town of Redfield around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service announced Thursday afternoon. It was estimated to have had peak winds of 90 mph.

The tornado downed hardwood trees across County Road 17, the weather service said. It was on the ground for about 2 miles. The path was 50 yards wide.

Later at 5:59 p.m., another tornado touched down for just over half a mile in Foresport, Oneida County. It was rated an EF-0, reaching peak winds of 80 mph and a max width of 75 yards, according to a damage survey published by the Weather Service Thursday evening.

Trees in its path uprooted and snapped on Kincaid Road, where the tornado landed before continuing onto West and Meekerville roads. It lifted on Horton Road.

The weather service so far has confirmed six other tornadoes struck Central and Western New York on Wednesday:

  • EF-1 in the towns of Arkwright and Hanover in Chautauqua County, at 12:06 p.m. It traveled 3 miles with top wind speeds of 110 mph.
  • EF-0 in the town of Eden in Erie County at 12:40 p.m. It traveled 0.9 miles with top wind speeds of 85 mph.
  • EF-1 in the town of Aurora in Erie County at 12:59 p.m. It traveled 1.5 miles with top wind speeds of 110 mph.
  • EF-0 in the towns of Darien and Alexander in Genesee County at 1:42 p.m. It traveled 1 mile with top wind speeds of 75 mph.
  • Of unknown strength in the town of Wolcott in Wayne County at 3:09 p.m. It traveled 0.1 miles.
  • EF-0 in town of Forestport in Oneida County around 6 p.m.

The weather service is continuing to conduct surveys of damage to determine if more tornadoes struck across Upstate New York.
