Rangers aid two hikers injured at same time, place in ADK high peaks

NYS DEC forest ranger report for week of June 23-30, 2024

Rangers rescued a hiker with a dislocated knee on June 24 and transported him across Lake Colden.NYSDEC

On the afternoon June 24, a 38-year-old man dislocated his knee, and a 28-year-old woman jammed her finger, while each were hiking near Lake Colden Outpost in the Adirondack High Peaks.

Eight New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers hiked three hours to reach the injured hikers at the outpost. They wrapped the man’s dislocated knee and cut a ring off the woman’s swollen finger to reduce pressure. As it was close to nightfall, they also gave the woman a headlamp so she could continue her hike.

Rangers transported the man with the injured knee by boat across Lake Colden, and then assisted him to the trailhead at around midnight.

The following reports are excerpted from DEC:

A 58-year-old from Florida got separated from his hiking party while descending Wright Peak on the night of June 27. He was also having leg cramps. A ranger assisted the man to the trailhead where he reunited with his party.

On the evening of June 27, a pair of hikers from Long Island ages 65- and 70-years-old got lost at a trail junction near Black Mountain, unsure which trail to take. A ranger hiked in and escorted them back to their vehicle.

A 70-year-old hiker fell and broke his nose and some teeth while hiking up Wright Mountain on the afternoon of June 30. A ranger soon reached the injured hiker, assessed his injuries, and helped walk him to the trailhead where they were met by a Lake Placid Ambulance.
