Alec Baldwin ready to make 'SNL' history as ratings soar: 'Oh, it's a big deal'

Carol M. Baldwin's most famous son is set to make television history this weekend.

Alec Baldwin will host "Saturday Night Live" for a record 17th time on Saturday. The sketch comedy show released a teaser video with footage of his past "SNL" appearances, including the infamous "Schweddy Balls" skit.

"This was my home. This was my heartbeat. It feels like so many lifetimes ago," Baldwin says in a dramatic voiceover. "I thought I had said goodbye, but the pull of fate is undeniable. So I must return, I must find the strength to..."

Cast member Vanessa Bayer then interrupts Baldwin to remind him he was just on "SNL" -- this past Saturday, in fact -- to reprise his President Donald Trump impersonation. "It's not that big of a deal," she tells the Emmy-winning actor.

"Oh, it's a big deal," Baldwin replies.

It is a big deal. Baldwin's portrayal of Trump has helped boost "SNL" to its highest ratings in 22 seasons.

Variety reports last Saturday's episode, which featured Baldwin and Melissa McCarthy as White House press secretary Sean Spicer, scored a 2.5 rating among adults 18-49. It was the second highest-rated TV show of the week in the key demo, only behind CBS comedy "The Big Bang Theory," which scored a 3.3 Thursday.

Season 42 of "SNL" is averaging 10.6 million total viewers -- up 22 percent over last year and the most since 1997, according to TV Line.

Viewership for "SNL" has been on a high especially since Trump won the election, often criticizing the show on Twitter. Ratings are even higher with delayed viewing, while clips on YouTube; Baldwin's Trump skits are among three of the seven most-watched bits and McCarthy's Spicer gag has already generated 19 million views in five days.

Baldwin will break a tie with Steve Martin for the "SNL" hosting record this Saturday, Feb. 11. Ed Sheeran will be the musical guest.

Baldwin is also keeping busy with his "Match Game" revival series on ABC and a slew of upcoming movies. The former "30 Rock" star's animated film "The Boss Baby" opens March 31 and "Blind" (with Demi Moore), "Drunk Parents" (with Salma Hayek) and "Downsizing" are all scheduled for release later this year.
