The Ashland City Council voted unanimously to pass an ordinance that will allow consumers to purchase beer on Sundays from Ashland City retailers at an earlier time.

Customers will be able to purchase beer from retailers beginning at 10 a.m. on Sundays, rather than noon.

The city ordinance states that “no beer shall be sold between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday, or on Sunday from 3 a.m.” until noon, which council members opted to change to 10 a.m.

Council members voted unanimously in favor of the first of two readings of the ordinance at its Nov. 13 meeting. Former Mayor Rick Johnson clarified during the council’s workshop the week prior that “state law does allow” beer sales at that time.

In April, Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill into law to allow Sunday wine and liquor sales. Beer can also be sold at retail locations on Sunday during certain hours. It also allows liquor stores, which can also sell beer, to operate on Sundays.

There are three liquor stores in Ashland City, which is the most allowed in town limits: Mulberry Package Store, Ashland City Liquor & Wine and Jackson Liquors. Local consumers can purchase beer at liquor stores and can also buy alcoholic beverages in places like grocery stores and convenience stores in the city.

City Attorney Jennifer Noe previously said this ordinance would allow convenience stores to sell beer at the same time as liquor stores, which can open at 10 a.m.
