How to clean a microwave

Microwaves can be a godsend if you're looking for something quick and easy when you're hungry.

For those who have microwaves built into your cabinetry or sitting on the counter, we've got the ultimate cleaning hacks for you.

Whether you're a natural cleaner or don't mind the chemicals, we've got the cleaning method for you.

A bowl and water

This is a really easy method, all you need is tap water and a bowl of water, making it a great option if you don't want to fork out on pricey products.

Follow the steps below for a clean microwave that only uses H2O!

  1. Grab your bowl and fill it with water
  2. Pop the bowl into the microwave and hit six minutes
  3. The water will boil, causing steam to loosen any food particles that may be on the walls, the turning table, and anywhere else that food may have exploded.
  4. Wait five minutes and grab a sponge or a damp cloth.
  5. Remove the bowl of water, and then remove the turning table and place it in the sink.
  6. Now wipe down every square inch of the inside of the microwave, making sure you get the inside of the door.
  7. Rinse the turning table in the sink (you can add a little dash of Dawn if needed) and then place it back in the microwave.

Clorox Wipes

You've probably already got some kind of anti-bacteria wipes in your home - so put them to good use.

This option is best for spot cleaning since the wipes are filled with germ-fighting cleaner.

Make sure you get the outside of the microwave, including the buttons and the door handle, it's an easy spot to miss but often covered in germs.

Lemons and water

When life gives you lemons... use them to clean the microwave.

This tip is incredibly simple but highly effective.

Lemon juice is a natural disinfectant, and it's perfect for cleaning the inside of a dirty microwave, plus it smells great.

Cleaning pro Lynsey Crombie explained: "Add the refreshing invigorating smell of lemons to your home," she said. "I love love love cleaning with lemons."

"There's so much you can do with them."

Here's how to clean a microwave using a lemon:

  1. Cut a lemon in half and put it face down on a microwave-friendly plate.
  2. Pour a few teaspoons of water over the top and turn the microwave on, watching it until it starts to produce steam.
  3. Remove the lemon and wipe off the liquid inside the microwave; the food splashes should come right off.

How to clean a microwave glass door

Try wiping the door with a dampened sponge that's been dipped in baking soda.

You can then remove it with a damp sponge or cloth.

If you've got tough grease stains on it, you can pull out the big guns and try a mixture of half-and-half water and vinegar.

If that doesn't work, you can try soap and water or an all-purpose anti-grease cleaner.

Ensure you don't spray the controls directly, as the electronics may be damaged.
