Iconic department store chain on verge of extinction as another outlet to vanish – shoppers have been put on note
AN iconic department store will shut one of its few remaining stores as it nears retail extinction.
Sears once boasted thousands of stores across the country but recently announced it would close one of its 11 remaining locations.
The branch in Union Gap, Washington, in the middle of the state, will reportedly close on September 22, according to The News Tribune.
This location was in the city's Valley Mall and had previously closed in December 2022.
The store reopened on November 6, 2023, but will face the same fate again.
A worrying Facebook post confirmed the sad news.

"Come in to you local Sears store in Union Gap. We are closing our store," the post said.
The post added that the location had changed its opening hours.
"Every thing must go.. even fixtures..." the post added.
Shoppers shared their sad thoughts on the news in the post's comments.
"I'm devastated, it's a beautiful Sears store we need this here because Sears benefits our communities," one person wrote.
"So sorry to see this!" another commenter said.
"I was hoping the reopening was the start of a new future.
"Very sad what has happened to the Sears family."
This closure would leave just one other Sears store in Washington State, in Tukwila, around 10 miles south of Seattle.
SEARED UP
Sears had over 3,000 stores when it merged with Kmart in the 2000s.
Store closures in 2024
The ongoing retail apocalypse has hit more and more retailers and resulted in more shuttered stores.
The U.S. Sun has previously reported on several chains that have bid farewell to some of their locations.
- A grocery chain has confirmed it will close 32 underperforming stores across the Northeast.
- GameStop has unexpectedly closed its last location in a certain area.
- The Fresh Market announced that it will close two of its locations as their leases end.
- Big Lots, which has 1400 locations across the country, will shut 300 stores.
Since then the department store has suffered major financial issues that have severely cut its retail footprint.
The chain announced it would shut another store this summer, The U.S. Sun has previously reported.
Its historic branch in Stockton, California, which is around 50 miles from the state capital, Sacramento, will close on August 16.
This location was in Weberstown Mall and had been open for over 60 years.
California fans also mourned this loss.
