Inside Jared Goff’s ‘wild’ $212m Lions contract as quarterback becomes highest-paid player in franchise history

Only one quarterback in the league now earns more than Goff

DETROIT Lions superstar Jared Goff will certainly be cashing it in over the coming years, with his new contract extension worth an amazing $212 million.

Goff led the Lions to their first playoff wins in more than three decades last season.

Now the franchise wants to build on that success, aiming to ensure the 29-year-old quarterback stays with them for a long time to come.

Goff's new deal, which was reported on Monday by Adam Schefter, will make him the NFL's second highest-paid quarterback on a per-year basis.

His deal will average $53 million per season, trailing only Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow, with $55 million.

It puts him ahead of Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers ($52.5 million), Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson ($52 million) and Philadelphia Eagles lynchpin Jalen Hurts ($51 million).

Goff becomes the highest-paid player in Lions history with this new deal, which will reportedly include $170 million guaranteed.

It's another sign of the clear intention in Detroit to make sure the brilliant recent progress under head coach Dan Campbell doesn't go to waste.

The Lions have now rewarded three of its star players this offseason, with over $444 million in contract extensions to Goff, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Penei Sewell.

The 2023 season was a stellar one for Goff. He threw for 4,575 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

There were emotional scenes in January as the Lions claimed those historic two playoff wins.

Detroit saw off the Los Angeles Rams by a single point on Wild Card weekend.

A week later, the Lions beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Divisional Round.

Their run came to a heartbreaking end in the NFC Championship Game.

The San Francisco 49ers fought back from behind to claim victory and advance to the Super Bowl.

Goff spent the first five seasons of his career with the Rams, before switching to the Lions in 2021.

"We've got a lot of work to do," he said.

"The expectations are high, but internally, our standards are raising, and our expectations are raising, and we've got goals and things we want to do.

"It's not like we're going to show up and start winning again.
