But Mahomes, 28, silenced his doubters when his wife Brittany shared photos of their family holiday in Portugal.
The Kansas City Chiefs passer looked ripped as he took command of an extra-large paddleboard with his family.
Mahomes attended numerous boozy parties and attended a series of sporting events in recent weeks.
But after returning to training, the NFL star looks to be back in shape as the Chiefs aim for a Super Bowl three-peat.

Mahomes dazzled in an all-black suit alongside his wife Brittany for the Chiefs' ring ceremony last week.
His trimmed physique comes in the wake of the Chiefs star recently struggling to put on an NFL jersey.
The NFL legend and his teammate Travis Kelce reunited for the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend in Kansas City - raising money for Children's Mercy.
The NFL icons were given Chiefs jerseys with their numbers on them in a viral TikTok clip.

"They still fit, even in the off-season," an announcer said. "Keeping it tight."
Unfortunately, Mahomes and Kelce both struggled to get them on over their clothes.

"It's dad bod season," Mahomes joked as he tried to roll his down.
The 28-year-old has regularly been forced to defend his physique.
"I definitely have the dad bod a little bit. I'll also say I have a great body for a quarterback," he told Time.
"You've got to have some padding in there to take the hits that we take."

Patrick Mahomes earns over $50 million per season from his Kansas City Chiefs contract.
But the superstar quarterback also cashes in on his brand off the field.
Mahomes has a reported net worth of $70 million.
And that's in no small part down to some of the brand he endorses.
The Chiefs star is the face of Adidas in the United States and appears in State Farm commercials.
He also pops up on adverts for Subway and Head and Shoulders.
Mahomes also became the face of energy drink Prime, which is owned by Logan Paul and KSI.
The Up & Adams host posted a video titled "It’s almost impossible for a QB to have success without a top 10-ish defense."
"We lose sight of the fact these quarterbacks don't win games by themselves, it's almost impossible to find a quarterback without the support of his defense being top 10, 11, 12," Adams said.
But one fan wasn't buying Adams' thoughts on the topic and slammed her opinion.
"Patrick Mahomes had the 24th-ranked defense in 2018 and it took an overtime loss to Tom Brady to keep him out of the Super Bowl in his first year as a starter we gotta stop with all these excuses for Herbert," argued the fan.
But Adams was quick to respond by writing: "Mahomes already might be one of the top 3 QBs ever. 'Mahomes did it' is not a reason to discredit every other QB.
