England 2-1 Slovakia LIVE RESULT – Euro 2024: Three Lions into last 8 as Bellingham and Kane lead dramatic turnaround

ENGLAND have secured their spot in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after a dramatic 2-1 win against Slovakia.

The Slovaks took the lead in Gelsenkirchen through Ivan Schranz on 25 minutes.

With seconds of the 90 remaining, Bellingham fired the Three Lions to extra-time with a stunning overhead kick.

Captain Harry Kane put England ahead less than a minute after the restart, flipping the last-16 clash on its head.

The Three Lions survived a late onslaught from the Slovaks and will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals next Saturday.

THAT was an absolute shambles - arguably the worst of a bad bunch of halves from England so far at these Euros.

Slovakia very much deserve to be ahead and Gareth Southgate’s men are lucky it is not by more than Ivan Schranz’s solitary strike.

The lack of movement from the attacking players is deeply worrying and you would hope changes are being considered at half-time.

Slovakian captain Milan Skriniar labelled England a long-ball team before the game and you have to say he is not wrong from this display so far.

The Three Lions' fans are doing their best to rally their team from the stands, roaring on a deflected shot from Kobbie Mainoo - our only decent performer so far - just before the break.

Southgate’s side need to sort it out, sharpish, or they are going home.

Boos ringing round the Gelsenkirchen stadium at the break summed it up.

  • HT: England 0-1 Slovakia

Despite having the lion's share of possession, England have looked quite blunt in attack.

They have fallen behind to a calm finish from Schranz and based on what we saw before the interval, you would not bet against Slovakia getting the next goal.

Gareth Southgate needs to earn his excessive salary during half-time, that is for sure.

  • HT: England 0-1 Slovakia

The referee brings the first half to a close.

Mainoo had a late shot from the edge of the box which deflected narrowly wide.

That was probably the only highlight of the first half for Gareth Southgate's side.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

45+2. Skriniar is shown a yellow card for a challenge on the halfway line.

Still plenty of time for England to find a goal in added time.

Saka is fouled in a wide area and the referee awards a free kick to the Three Lions.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    45. England continue to pass the ball around.

All too often there seems no penetration to their play.

We are going to have three added minutes in Gelsenkirchen.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    43. Bellingham throws his arms in the air trying to get the crowd going.

It is a bit rich to demand more of the fans when the players are giving so little.

This is a very disjointed performance from Southgate's side in this first half.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    41. Slovakia is trying to get some instructions to his players as the Slovakian defender receives some treatment.

This will be a stern test of his managerial skills to turn this game around.

From a Slovakian perspective, it is all going according to plan right now.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    39. Bellingham gets up gingerly from a challenge in the box for a header.

The Slovakian defender has stayed down and need some medical attention.

As the replay shows, he was actually clattered by his own keeper.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    37. Bellingham wins a free kick in a wide position.

It gives England the chance to put Slovakia under some pressure.

As Foden's ball is whipped in, it is headed clear by the Slovaks.

  • England fans stunned as Slovakia take lead

This was not part of the script for Three Lions' fans.

They have yet to have a single shot on target and now find themselves behind.

Schranz's composed finish is the difference between the two sides currently.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    35. Slovakia are still looking dangerous on the counter.

Bellingham looks to make a driving run into the box but as he crosses from the byline it is blocked for another corner.

Chance for England to get some numbers in the box.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    33. Trippier does well to keep the ball in play from an overhit cross.

Foden finds Kane, who looks to whip a cross into the back post.

Once again it is overhit and goes harmlessly out for a goal kick.

The problem with Kane dropping so deep looking for the ball is that England have no one in the box to contend for crosses.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    31. Slovakia seem content letting England have possession.

They are getting numbers behind the ball and making themselves difficult to break down.

The kicking of Martin Dubravka has been questionable in these early stages.

WHAT a ropey first quarter of the game for England - who have been punished by Ivan Schranz well-taken opener.

Three yellow cards already, being cut up open at the back on a couple of occasions before the defence was breached… this has to be a real worry for Gareth Southgate.

His side need to liven up because right now they are going home.

John Stones said before the game that the senior pros now need to step up - time to see it happen, particularly from his best mate Kyle Walker who has had a shocker so far.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    29. England have got it all to do now.

You cannot say that the Slovaks do not deserve their lead, they have started the better of the two teams.

Southgate will be hoping his side can find an equaliser before the interval.

  • England 0-1 Slovakia

    27. Well this is not the start we expected.

The ball is slotted into the path of Schranz, who has got in front of Guehi, who can not challenge him at all.

He slots the ball past Pickford to give Slovakia the lead.

  • Goal - Ivan Schranz (Slovakia)

  • England 0-0 Slovakia

    25. As the ball is half-cleared to the edge of the box, Mainoo strikes a volley on the outside of his right foot.

It narrowly fizzes over the crossbar.

The England fans enjoyed that one.

  • England 0-0 Slovakia

    23. England continue to pass the ball around.

Foden makes a run down the left wing but it easily cut out by the Slovakians.

Bellingham then plays the ball into Foden in the box, who crumbles to the ground, with the English palyers demanding a penalty.

The referee does not agree with the appeals.

As the ball is recycled and crossed into the box, Kane's header is deflected behind for a corner.

  • England 0-0 Slovakia

    21. When they get into the final third, England are severely lacking options.

All too often they are clipping balls into the box more through hope than judgement.

As a result, the Slovakians are managing to silence the England fans so far in Gelsenkirchen.

  • England 0-0 Slovakia

    19. This is looking a very even game at the moment.

Many felt that England had far too much quality for this to be the case this evening.

Currently, Slovakia are not looking the underdogs they were billed to be before the game.

  • England 0-0 Slovakia

    17. It has not been an awe-inspiring start by England.

The English faithful will be hoping to see them spark into life sooner rather than later.

A Slovakia goal would really ask some questions of the Three Lions with the start they have made to the game.

Bellingham is shown a card for a foul in the middle of the park.

  • England 0-0 Slovakia

    15. Kucka is shown a yellow card for a clumsy challenge.

The referee does not seem shy in getting his cards out here.

Three bookings in the first fifteen minutes of the game in Gelsenkirchen.

  • England 0-0 Slovakia

    13. Once again Haraslin causes problems for the English defence.

As he let rip with a shot in the box, Guehi did well to block.

Slovakia have been awarded a free kick deep in the English half.

It is played into the penalty area but is easily dealt with by Southgate's side.

  • England 0-0 Slovakia

    11. The ball is played towards the backpost to Trippier.

He has the chance to work Dubravka in the Slovakia goal but blazes the ball high over the crossbar.

The Newcastle full-back really should have been working the keeper at the least there.
