  • Road to recovery

Murray underwent the surgery after retiring hurt in difficult scenes at Queen's on June 19.

He could barely move on the court and quit at 4-1 down to Jordan Thompson.

However, despite the op, the Scot still held hopes of playing at his beloved All England Club, where he was victorious in 2013 and 2016.

Murray practised with fellow injury-hit Brit Kyle Edmund at Wimbledon on Monday, winning 6-3 2-0.

And he was determined to give his back as long as possible to recover before making a decision.

  • Murray statement

Murray's team have released a statement confirming the sad news that he is unable to take to the grass today - and that this is indeed his final Wimbledon.

A spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, despite working incredibly hard on his recovery since his operation just over a week ago, Andy has taken the very difficult decision not to play the singles this year.

"As you can imagine, he is extremely disappointed but has confirmed that he will be playing in the doubles with Jamie and looks forward to competing at Wimbledon for the last time."

  • BREAKING: Andy Murray is OUT of Wimbledon

ANDY MURRAY is OUT of his final Wimbledon singles.

The two-time champion was desperate to make it back on to Centre Court for one final swansong farewell.

But he has been unable to recover in time following surgery last Saturday and withdrew from the tournament around eight hours before he was due to take to the grass.

Murray, 37, underwent a minor op to remove a cyst from his spine with the threat of gruelling competitive tennis reopening his stitches.

And unfortunately he does not feel ready to play his round-one clash with Tomas Machac, which was scheduled last on Centre Court around 6pm this evening.

  • Boulter: Seeding shows progress

Kartie Boulder has given herself a pat on the back for making Wimbledon as a seeded player for the first time.

The British no.1 will enter the iconic tournament at 32nd seed.

And she has explained how it the seeding shows the hard work she is putting into her tennis is paying off.

Boulter kicks off her tournament against Tatjana Maria this afternoon.

It's been a goal of mine to be in Wimbledon, seeded, with my team for a long time.

Naturally I want to be playing these tournaments on my own ranking, I don't want to be taking wild cards if I can help it.

Also being seeded, it's a moment for me to show the dedication I've put in these last few years.

I think that's a little pat on the back for me.

I feel very proud to have that number, I'm striving for more but I'm happy at the moment with where I'm at.

  • Draper ready to fill Murray shoes

Jack Draper has claimed he is ready to follow in the footsteps of Andy Murray, by taking on the home expectation at Wimbledon.

Draper, who begins his campaign against Elias Ymer this afternoon, has claimed he wants to take over from Murray's legacy.

The Brit said: "It’s the position I exactly want to be in. I want to take over from Andy’s legacy, what he did for British tennis. I don’t see why there is no reason why I can’t.

“Whether that is going to be this week or next year or the year after, I am doing everything I can to be the most professional, the best player I can be.

"I have really worked hard physically, I have done all the right things to get myself in this position from a point last year where I was a bit over the place with everything.

"I wasn’t sure where I was going to be. But I am proud of getting myself to this point where I am seeded. I am the No.1 Brit and I am in a good position.

“But I am taking one match at a time, one day at a time."

  • All eyes on Andy

Andy Murray is due out on Centre Court at 4.45pm today against Tomas Machac - but there remains huge doubt as to whether he will appear or not.

The Scot legend is set to make a late decision on an appearance just nine days after having back surgery.

He played a 90-minute points session against Kyle Edmund on Monday and looked good, leading by a set and a break when their time slot ended.

And Murray said he will make a late call on whether to play or not.

It was good. I am going to have a chat with my team now and speak to my family this evening and then make a decision. It is getting better. And the testing and stuff I have done is good. Yeah, I just need to decide whether it is enough to compete really.

  • Frances Tiafoe 'losing to clowns'

American star Frances Tiafoe claims that he's been "losing to clowns" during a year that has seen his ranking plummet.

Having previously reached the top 10, the former US Open semi-finalist has struggled for results this year.

After recovering from two sets down to beat Matteo Arnaldi yesterday, the 26-year-old reflected: "Literally this week last year I was 10 in the world and now I’m barely seeded here.

"Losing to clowns, I hate to say it but I’m just gonna be honest.

"I took the game for granted and got a little too comfortable. You stop having fun with it and you find yourself in a weird position.

"Then you kind of forget what you were doing to win?"

  • Novak Djokovic's incredible recovery

The Serbian superstar is scheduled second on Centre Court this afternoon, after recovering from knee surgery just THREE WEEKS AGO.

It appeared a tall order that Djokovic, 37, would make it back in time to play at Wimbledon this year, but that's exactly what he's done.

Ahead of his first round battle with Vit Kopriva, here's everything you need to know about Djokovic's remarkable turnaround.

  • Meet the world No1

Jannik Sinner safely booked his place in round two with a 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-3 win over Yannick Hanfmann on No1 Court.

The Italian secured world No1 status for the first time last month, achieving the pinnacle after Roland Garros.

Here is all you need to know about the 22-year-old superstar taking over tennis.

  • Jannik Sinner reacts

Jannik Sinner survived Yannick Hanfmann to advance to the next round of Wimbledon.

I’m very happy, first of all, to be in the second round. I want to thank everyone for the support, it’s amazing.

He played really well, he served well. I missed a couple of shots.

First-round matches are never easy. Hopefully in the next round, I will raise my level.

Tomorrow I have a day off, then I’ll try to find my rhythm. Ending a match in a really positive way can hopefully help me at the start of the next round.

  • Emma Raducanu reacts

Emma Raducanu is "over the moon" after reaching the second round of Wimbledon:

As I said in the first press conference, I’d be over the moon if I won my first round here. And I really am. I feel just the joy to be on-site, the joy to be part of the buzz. I’m really just enjoying myself.

I think that each match I win should be celebrated a lot. I think for me, ‘cause I know how hard matches are to win, to come by. I think that now, yeah, having had a few wins under my belt, I’m like really cherishing every single one because I know how difficult it is to be on the flip side of it.

Results-wise I have no expectations. I just have expectations of myself to really put myself on the line on the court and fight and not let any frustrations get to me.

  • That's all folks

With Miomir Kecmanovic beating Sumit Nagal on Court 6, that's it from day one of Wimbledon 2024.

We've seen most of the favourites breeze through to round two, with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff and Jannik Sinner all winners.

There has also been some British success, with Emma Raducanu, Lily Miyazaki and Sonay Kartal all flying the flag with wins - although we have said goodbye to Heather Watson, Arthur Fery and Liam Broady.

Tomorrow is set to be another jam-packed day of action - with plenty of Brits set to take to the court.

Most notably of all Andy Murray is scheduled third on Centre Court, as he takes on Tomas Machac for what could be his final Wimbledon singles match.

  • World No1 safely through

Jannik Sinner has recovered from a third set wobble to book his place in round two with a four-sets win over Yannick Hanfmann on No1 Court.

The Italian, 22, looked to be cruising against the German, only to drop the third set 6-3.

No1 Court's roof came on, just in case there was a late night comeback in the offing.

But it wasn't to be, with Sinner composing himself to win 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-3.

He will meet former finalist Matteo Berrettini in round two, after his compatriot defeated Marton Fucsovics, also in four sets.

  • Raducanu likens win to England

Emma Raducanu has likened her 7-6 6-3 victory over Renata Zarazua to England's last-gasp triumph over Slovakia last night.

Taking to the mic after her first Wimbledon win in two years, the former US Open champion, 21, said: "I’m incredibly happy to be back here. I was nervous, I think everyone could see that in my tennis.

At the end of the day you have to do what it takes to get over the line.

Obviously watching the football last night, it was like winning ugly. But it all counts.

"It’s incredible. There is such a great buzz in the summertime. The tennis, football and F1 and it all uplifts me. My motivation is to keep coming back and feel that buzz.”

  • A third British winner!

Sonay Kartal has followed Emma Raducanu and Lily Miyazaki into round two of Wimbledon by producing a sensational comeback against 29th seed Sorana Cirstea.

The 22-year-old from Sutton fell a set down after losing the opening stanza 6-3 to the experienced Romanian.

From 2-2 in the second set she took control, however, rattling off a sensational TEN games in a row to win 3-6 6-2 6-0 and claim her maiden Grand Slam triumph.

She will next be in action on Wednesday, when she'll face French hopeful Clara Burel.

  • Coco marches on

Second seed Coco Gauff has laid down a marker by trouncing her American compatriot Caroline Dolehide 6-1 6-2 on Centre Court.

This time 12 months ago, Gauff endured one of the lowest moments of her career when she lost in round one of Wimbledon to Sofia Kenin.

There was not a hint of history repeating itself this evening, however, with Gauff thoroughly outplaying Dolehide to come through.

While there are of course much tougher tests to come, no one will fancy playing Coco in this kind of form at Wimbledon, particularly with Aryna Sabalenka having withdrawn this morning.

Next up for Gauff will be world No142 Anca Todoni, after the Romanian overcame Olga Danilovic earlier today.

The Sutton-born star lost the first set 6-3 to Sorana Cirstea over on Court 15.

She has come roaring back, however, and has taken the match into a decider by winning the second set 6-2.

Can she join Emma Raducanu and Lily Miyazaki in round two?

  • First set Coco Gauff!

No2 seed Coco Gauff would be expected to dominate her round one opponent and American compatriot Caroline Dolehide here on Centre Court, and she is doing just that.

She has taken the first set 6-1, and is crushing Dolehide in virtually every aspect.

The underdog cannot handle Gauff's pace, and you have to feel this could be over pretty soon.

  • Fans loving umpire's voice

Umpire Kader Nouni's voice is beloved across the world for its deep, husky tone.

And today on Centre Court has been no exception.

Nouni's late-night radio style score announcements are drawing titters from the crowd during Coco Gauff's clash with Caroline Dolehide.

In strictly on-court matters, Gauff has been brilliant - and leads her compatriot 5-1.

Coco Gauff is so far having no troubles over on Centre Court against American compatriot Caroline Dolehide.

She leads 4-1 with two breaks, and has already electrified the excited the crowd.

One point in particular during the last game lifted bums off seats - as she used her incredible speed and powers of retrieval to hit a Dolehide smash back for a winner.

There is unlikely to be a repeat of last year's round one exit here in SW19.

  • Charles Broom on Wawrinka defeat

Charles Broom was swept away by Stan Wawrinka as the Swiss celebrated their first success of the week over England.

The St Albans battler, 26, went down 6-3 7-5 6-4 to the three-time Grand Slam champion on No.2 Court.

Yet Broom will be kicking himself for squandering four set points in the second set on his Wimbledon debut.

Wawrinka, who hails from Lausanne, moved into the second round at the ripe old age of 39.

And he will hope this is a good omen for his national team ahead of the Euros quarter-final with the Three Lions on Saturday.

Broom said: “I’m a little bit disappointed but honestly just an immense sense of pride to be able to play here and push him pretty close.

“I had a lot of friends there. A couple of mates flew over from the US. One was wearing an ‘I love Charlie Broom’ shirt. I was, like: ‘Mate, you have to take that one off.’

“The support from everyone was just amazing.”
